  • No.  I think if you get a very basic phone (no touch pad etc) it does not require a Data Plan.  My DH has a VERY basic phone and he does not require a data plan.

  • Not all phones require it.  The iphones, droids, blackberries, etc all do.  I wonder if smart phones are the way of the future though

  • Not all phones do.  Mine doesn't, I don't need it or use it so I won't pay for it.  I think the "smart phones" have to have a data plan but just regular old plain cell phones do not.

  • Mine does not either but I understand that certain phone carriers (i.e. Verizon) are now automatically adding them to new plans even if you aren't getting a smart phone.

This is not true.  Verizon still has about 10 phones that do not require any sort of data package.  Then they have a level with phones that require their $10/mo data plan.  Then they have the smart phones that require the unlimited $30/mo data plan.

There was a news article recently that talked about this.  They were saying how people mainly use their phones for data and not voice and to expect the plans to be tiered on the amount of data used instead of minutes.

I still have a basic phone with no data plan, I had to fight Verizon on it but they do have 5 or 10 basic phones that you can get without data. I refused to pay for a data plan so I just have a very basic phone. But they do require it on all of their Smart phones and also "Multimedia" phones which are not technically smartphones but require data plan because they can access the internet.

Actually, this did just happen to a good friend of mine. She does not have a smart phone and Verizon added the data package to her phone anyway. She had a huge fight with them to get it removed. As mumegs mentioned, it could be that it was a "multimedia" phone but I think that includes almost all phones nowadays.
