Hi Ladies!
I'm new here on the Minneapolis/St. Paul board and was wondering if anyone here lived/lives in Shakopee? My fiance and I (getting married in October) have been looking at houses and found our DREAM house in Shakopee and I was just wondering what people thought of living there. All comments are welcome!
Looking forward to chatting with you all more!
Re: Anyone live in Shakopee?
I still visit on a regular basis since my brother lives off 10th street. My SIL works at St Francis and really likes it. My Grandma also lives in Shakopee at St Gert's.
One of the only negatives is grocery shopping options. There is Cub off of 169/Vierling. I think Target has expanded but not full size. There is a super Walmart but that is by 169/18 on the other side.
let me know if you have other questions.
I live near there. It's okay. It kind of depends what you are looking for. It's one of the further suburbs so it's kind of a trek into the cities. But I think the schools are good and it's close enough that you can still find almost anything you need near by.
I personally am looking forward to moving back to a closer suburb in a few years but that's mostly because I hate my commute.
We're kind of going out.
I grew up in Shakopee but currently live in Chaska.
The schools are good but I ditto what pp said about grocery shopping. Your options are limited!
I live here. We don't have kids so I can't comment on the schools or anything. We like it. We won't be staying here forever, but it's not because we don't like the city (we just want more land).
I don't have a problem with the grocery shopping (and I love to cook). If you need something "fancy," there's a Byerly's in Chanhassen that isn't too far away.
The only thing I wish the town had was a bookstore, and I'd be set.
I think people overestimate how far away it really is--unless you need to go to the east side. DH works in Minneapolis, and it really isn't that far of a commute for him. To me, you're close enough to a lot of things (EP Mall, Super Target in Prior Lake, etc) that it all evens out.
I lived in Apple Valley until I was in the 8th grade, and then my family moved to Shakopee. I ended up staying in the Apple Valley schools despite my commute (and my parent's commute until I could drive), because the Shakopee schools weren't that great in comparison, and were a little bit behind in their curriculum at the time. I would have had to go to the high school to take some classes even though I was still in their junior high grades...and I wasn't in any honors classes or anything.
Aside from the schools, Shakopee is a nice area that has grown a TON since we moved there. If you are looking for a quieter suburb that's a bit out of the way from big city life, then Shakopee just may be the place for you!
Prior Lake is also a nice area, and I think the schools are a bit better if that is something that concerns you.
Oh also know that traffic on 169 is pretty much horrendous a lot of the time, haha.
Needless to say, if DH and I ever move back to MN, Shakopee would not be on the list of places we would look to live, FWIW, but we are also more attracted to the city life.
