Vent...stupidly long...sorry

Clearly I am channeling my energy elsewhere to keep my mind off my stupid body...

So, the plan for next year is that I am going to be teaching Language Arts (as usual) and Social Studies (which is new to me).  I am licensed to teach both, but under the stupid No Child Left Behind law, I am only "highly qualified" to teach Language Arts.  The annoying part about this is that when I graduated undergrad I had to propose all my classes for my concentrations...and they approved mine without ever telling me that I needed a geography course to be highly qualified (you know, when I could have just added it to my course when I was already a full time student...ugh).  So then I graduated assuming I was HQT, only to find out I was not.  It hasn't been a big deal until now though since I have only been teaching Lang. Arts.

Anyway, I found an online course through our state university that is perfect to take this summer...which would mean I would be all set in the fall. I went through the state to get pre-approval for the course.  The only problem is, I live over the border in the next state, so now the university is going to charge me out of state tuition (even though I work in state, pay state income tax, etc...)...which means it will cost $2000 more than in-state tuition, which means that I won't get that money reimbursed through my school...even though it is because they have changed my schedule that I need to take the course in the first place.  Ugh.

I have an email in to our assistant superintendent hoping that she might be able to work something out, but I am super frustrated about the whole process.  Somehow having to pay $2000 out of my pocket so I can teach one 45 minute period a day without the school having a mark against it (they have to report any teachers who are not HQT and are teaching that subject to the state) seems stupid to me.

  • Boo. This whole No Child Left Behind business seems rather counterproductive. Hope something works out for you!

  • Update!  My assistant superintendent just emailed me back.  She said she thinks that because I teach in VT, they will give me in-state tuition, I just need to confirm with the registrar (who is closed today...).  Also, she said if not, she will find grant money to cover my other courses this summer, so that I will actually only have to pay about $300 (rather than $2000) out of pocket, which is much more reasonable.  Phew...at least something is working out for me today...

  • Thank goodness they were able to help you out a bit. I know it might be sucky to be back in class, but I think a geography class would be a fun summer thing to do.

  • Woo - that went from an extreme boo to an extreme yay very quickly! I'm glad.

What does the whole "highly qualified" designation get you in comparison?

  • Yay.  Good news - I hope this works out for you.

By the way, I'm going to say here that I really admire all you ladies who teach.  Thank you for all of your work - I know it isn't easy.

  • Kaesha--HQT status doesn't get you anything...it just means the school doesn't get marks off them in terms of meeting NCLB (No Child Left Behind) guidelines, and they don't have to send letters home to all of my kids that says I am not highly qualified to teach them.

  • That's strikes me as hugely undermining to a teacher's integrity, knowledge and skill base to have to inform parents that, while they're qualified to teach a subject, they aren't highly qualified to teach it. Wow.

Yup...and this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is wrong with the NCLB laws...

Oh, and the geography class I am taking has NOTHING to do with what I will actually be teaching in 6th grade Social Studies...

  • I hate the stupid HQT requirements too. It's dumb. I'm sorry about all the bs.
