Is this a good neighborhood for families?

Hello,

We were looking to rent in the  Seminary Hill neighborhood in Alexandria va. I am not from the area and was wondering if this would be a good place for small children...6 months and 2 years. How are the schools?? Any help would be appreciated

Thank you!

Re: Is this a good neighborhood for families?

  • It would not be my first choice, and I live in Alexandria.

For the area, and the $ you pay to live in Alexandria, the schools are not up to par.  There are 2 or 3 elementary schools I would seriously consider (George Mason and Douglas Macarthur are 2 of them).  After elementary school, we will likely move or do private.

  • That is more of an "area" than a neighborhood.  Parts of it are some of the nicest neighborhoods in the city (along Seminary Rd, east of 395.)  Some are apartment complexes that I might have lived in when I was 22 and making only $25,000/yr.  Then there are pockets of things in between.

As for schools, like pp said, the elem schools can be decent.  Then everyone seems to give up on them and move or go private.  But they still aren't bad schools.  Just not always topnotch.

As much as moving sucks, if you are going to be here a few years (which your schooling question indicated since your kid is 2) I might suggest renting someplace for a year then once you know the area pick your longer term rental.

  • Definitely agree with PP re: the "pockets of things in between." There is a huge range.

For what its worth, I think its a great time to buy into City of Alexandria. Costs are a bit lower than Arlington and there's still potential for growth as the school system evolves. The demographics in the city are changing rapidly and with all of the money that has been invested into TC Williams, its hard to imagine things not turning around by the time your kids are in middle and high school. (For those that remember Washington Lee in Arlington 10-15 years ago you know what I'm talking about). There are a number of good elementary schools. Just my opinion. I know you're probably asking about the family-feel of the area and I think that will be a street by street determination. :-)

Depending on the part of Seminary Hill, the neighborhood does feed into MacArthur.
