Moms - Sleeping question

Yesterday was C's 2 month checkup.  We saw a dr. we had never seen before.  She asked how C was sleeping at night, and I told her he sleeps 7-8 hours straight, gets up to eat, then back down for 2-3 more hours.  I thought this was pretty good for a 2 month old, but she replied "oh, no that's no good.  He's almost 11 pounds, he should be sleeping 12 hours straight.  7 pm - 7 am, no waking."  Indifferent  Am I crazy, or is that a lot to be expecting at this age?  I thought we were doing great, and she made me feel pretty terrible.

Re: Moms - Sleeping question

  • That is crazy.  I have never heard of a 2 month old sleeping 12 hours straight.  Heck, 7-8 hours in remarkable, lol.  I'd be looking into switching pedi's and sticking with only one that you're happy with.
  • Umm no you are not crazy at all!  My guys didn't sleep thru the night until they were like 6mths old!  I would of payed money to have them sleeping that good at 2mths old!  Consider yourself very lucky:)

  • She also said something about not moving him once he falls asleep.  So, if he falls asleep on your lap, don't move him to the swing.  Because then he won't "trust sleep" because he woke up somewhere else.  How does a 2 month old have the cognitive ability to remember where he falls asleep?  Ugh, yeah, probably need to find a new pedi.  Thanks for your responses!

  • Your pedi has lost her mind.  I'd find a new one.

  • At 2 months old I was still having to wake DD up every 3 hrs to feed her.  I don't see anything wrong with how your child is sleeping.  It wasn't until she was 6months old that we were given the ok to let her sleep all night.  DD had weight issues, but I still don't see how there is a problem if your child is sleeping for 7-8 hours straight.  Don't let her make you feel bad.  As long as your child is happy, healthy and safe you are doing everything right.

Ditto, Nicole! DD1 never STTN until she was 9 months old.

How on earth would this be remotely practical for just about anyone? It obviously would only apply to your first child, at best.

    And 12 hours? LOL.

  • Definitely look for a new pedi.  That's ridiculous.  Kennedy is sleeping through the night, but never 12 hours.  And she's nearly 4 months old.  She's been STTN since she was 3 weeks old, but not usually more than 10 hours.

  • WOW!!! DD was STTN starting at 2 months and by STTN i mean 5-6 hours and not going right back down and my pedi thought that was great for her age
  • You're pedi is nuts. Every kid is different. My DD didn't sleep through the night until she was 10 months, DS started sleeping 8 hour stretches at 6 weeks.  Neither of them has ever slepy for 12 hours at a time and they're now 7 and 1.5.  Also, the not moving the baby thing sounds like a really great way to increase the chances that the baby falls off of mom's chest in the middle of the night.  I've learned over the years that you have to trust your instincts.  Doctors are not infallible, they can be wrong and come up with stupid ideas too.

This is what I've been saying to my H.  Something is way weird about this pedi's theories.  The thing that sucks is I really like the other doctors at this practice, but I think we would have to see this doctor at some point.  If she is this wacky about something simple like sleeping, I wouldn't trust her with any serious health questions.

Can you schedule your appointments around when she's out of the office?  In my practice you can ask to see a specific doctor, but you have to compromise flexibility because they all rotate to different locations and are only available a limited set of hours.  I would talk to the scheduling person in the office to see if this is possible before you abandon a practice you otherwise really like.

So far we haven't been given a choice of which doctor to see, just day of the week/time choices.  I will ask though since now we definitely have a preference.  Thanks!

  • Babies are capable of 12 hours at two months, but that would definitely involve sleep training. I would pay for 7-8 hours a night, though. So good for you!!!

The moving a sleeping baby thing is ridiculous! Not sure where she got that idea. There are 4 pedis in my office and they all have different ideas about sleep. One says they should STTN at 2 weeks, one says at two months, one says it might never happen, and one co-sleeps. I love all my pedis. The sleep issue is one that will likely disappear in a year (at most). In the grand scheme of things there are way more important things you will need your pediatrician for, so I wouldn't rush out and switch just because they have crazy sleep ideas.

  • My almost 3 month old DD sleeps 9-10 hours stretches, and I find it miraculous. My DS didn't sleep the entire night through until after he was a year old, when I quit breastfeeding. At 9 or 10 months old, he was still waking up multiple times in the night to nurse. To me that just shows every baby is so different. I'd be very happy with 7-8 hrs for 2 months.

And the not moving the baby thing, kind of crazy.

  • Yeah that's nuts. We just had our two month visit and he thought Lil's 6-7hr stretch is just great. I think I would get worried if she slept for 12 hours!!
