Teachers: Has anyone done private tutoring?
I will be doing private tutoring this summer and was wondering if you ladies had any tips or ideas about how to get started, run my business, etc. I am all new to this so any info you have to share would be so helpful. Thanks in advance!
Re: Teachers: Has anyone done private tutoring?
Yes - but most of my clients were clients that were referred to me via colleagues or through the school I used to teach at (we kept a list of "in house" and "other" tutors, basically so parents could pick a tutor who knew the school's exact curriculum, etc. and who were typically cheaper than the "other" tutors).
I ran on a check-only basis, payment in advance or on time ONLY, parent had to sign each time they paid, and each student had their own folder where I kept track of payments, topics covered, etc.
Hope this helps, and isn't too confusing, I have a bit of a headache.
A teacher I worked with at my preschool in PA did private tutoring (she was K-12 certified). She actually worked with a firm that referred her to jobs. The way they worked is that families seeking tutors paid a fee to the firm to match their child with a good tutor, and then when the tutor was matched, the family paid her directly, via check, to tutor their kids. She actually made decent money doing it, and got to set her own rates, and was referred to work with multiple kids. It was a great way to go about getting clients.
It's something to look into, if those kinds of services are availible in your area! It's sort of like head-hunters for tutoring. It worked out great for my friend too because a couple of the families she tutored for recommended her to their friends, so she built up a nice clientel of her own, without the service and in addition to the clients she gained through the service
