Baby Cold or Allergies?

Baby H woke up with a bunch of snot in his nose already.  :(  The poor guy was blowing snot bubbles as he bf this morning.  How do I know if it is a cold vs. allergies?  I'm going to use the humidifier later and I already have him napping his his swing.  Thanks!

Re: Baby Cold or Allergies?

  • There really isn't any way of knowing at such a young age. There's not much you can do for them anyway except aspirate his nose if it gets clogged up and run the humidfier. Sometimes A wakes up with a stuffy nose but it's cleared up within an hour of being awake. As he gets older you'll be able to tell if seasonal allergies effect him or not. I'm almost positive A has seasonal allergies but it's taken me 15 months to come to that conclusion. This past spring she was sneezing, had a runny nose, and red eyes at the exact same time I did when my allergies were acting up.

  • Babies can't get seaonal allergies the first year. They have to become sensitized to something first. So the first time they are exposed, they dont react. So next year keep an eye out for it. Its probably just newborn stuffiness. Keep up with the aspirator and try some saline drops. C/S babies tend be more mucosy too.

This.  C had horrible stuffiness and mucus for the first 2 months.  Same advice as above:  aspirator, saline drops and humidifier.

I didn't know about that... thanks!  It makes me feel a little better since he doesn't have a fever and his cough is pretty nonexistent.  The doctor told me to do all of the same which was my plan anyway.  Just concerned since he's only 4 weeks old. :)
