Showering and Thunderstorms

Will you take a shower if it is lightning outside?

Re: Showering and Thunderstorms

  • I've honestly never really thought about it.

If I had to shower right then & there, then yeah.. probably.

If it could wait, then I'd probably wait.

  • I never thought about it until the babysitter brought it up on Monday. DH then said as a child, they never took baths during a storm. He remembers it as an excuse to stay up past his bedtime.
  • My mom never let us, but we also had skylights in our bathrooms, I think that was her reasoning? I still don't though, and I don't stand near windows either.

  • It doesn't bother me. Mythbusters had an episode about that, I'm pretty sure they busted the myth.

  • Yes.  I will take a bath too.  I live on the edge.

  • Yes.

My mom is super lightning-phobic. If I'm on the phone with her and mention a storm is coming (hypothetically speaking, since the southeastern american "storm" has become extinct), she will flip out and tell me to hang up immediately.

My grandmother was struck by lightning because she was sitting in a window seat eating a bowl of cereal. The lightning hit the spoon!

So really... you should stand on one foot on a stack of erasers. It's really the only way to save yourself from catastrophe. :)

  • I do if it's not too crazy... but I shower much faster :)

I don't think twice about it. I'm sure I have.

  • We weren't allowed to growing up, but we had well water. The idea was by showering the pump would come on, making it more likely to be struck by lightning. I'm not sure how much truth there is to it, especially considering the pump did get struck a few times over the years despite our efforts.

Now that I'm on city water, I don't think twice about showering during a T-storm. Unless maybe I thought the house might lose power and kill my hot water.

  • I will not!!

I grew up hearing that lightning could somehow come in through the water pipes.... my DH laughs at me about it ALL the time!

I also try not to talk on the phone when it's lightning, either.... LOL

  • My parents never used to let me take a shower if there was a storm outside.  They instilled the fear in me of getting electrocuted (not sure how often that actually happens but probably not a bad policy lol).

  • i've never heard of this before...ever. so yes, i do shower during thunderstorms.

jen, i would like to know if your grandma was alright after what happened to her or not. i was sad to read that.

  • We didn't growing up, as well as not being on the phone (Crazy kept up that habit even with cordless phones, which took me years to break her of). Also she texts me in a frenzy to tell me to turn off our tvs and computers. Since it never rains at my house, ever, this is no longer a concern. My grass dying, however, is.

Yes! Sorry, I should've mentioned that! I forget the current/physics of it, but however she was sitting (I guess only one leg grounded..?), it just went through her  but not through her heart. I forget the story, but the result was that it hurt and scared teh crap out of her, but she was fine.
