Travel/Airline help

I am flying to Puerto Rico with my niece and her grandfather. We booked our tickets all on the same itinerary.

Do I need special permission/letter/documentation to take her with me? I have never flown with children before, especially with a child thats not mine. I'll have the birth certificates with me for my kids, but I'm thinking even if I travel with hers, I'm not on it.

We are flying on COntinental Airlines and their website is not helpful and doesn't give a phone number.

Re: Travel/Airline help

  • p.s. thank you for being patient with me over the next 2 weeks. I am slowly beginning to freak out over every little detail.
  • You might want to ask on the travel board.

i have no clue but a certified letter from her mom wouldn't be a bad idea.

  • Post on Travel and International Nesties.

"Flying to Puerto Rico with a child who is not my own"

Or page roar on Travel, she works for an airline, I think.

  • I know that my friend had this issue before and needed documentation that it was okay to travel with a child who was not hers, but I believe it was the cruise line who gave her an issue, not the airline.   She got all the way to the cruise ship and they werent going to let her board until they got documentation from the parent.

We will be meeting her parents in PR, and they will be boarding the ship with her, so I don't have to worry about that part.

Thanks everyone. I will post on the travel board.

Tammy I typed: "I am traveling with my niece, do I need written permission from her parents?" and it gave me three links.

Thansk I tried too and I got the same links, but it never gave me a direct answer. My SIL just called and apparently we need nothing. I think I might still have her get a notarized letter just in case.

  • I found links for sample forms for international travel.  I know PR isn't international, but better to be safe than sorry.  Especially with the medical info if God forbid she gets sick or injured.  You need authorization to approve treatment.

Authorization for foreign travel with minor:

  • I've said this before and I'll say it again (here vs. ranting to IRL people):  It astounds me that anyone can travel domestically with any kid not old enough to have i.d.  If someone wanted to kidnap a kid under 2, they could literally buy a ticket for themselves, nab a kid and show up at the airport moments later and board the plane with them since the kid only sits on their lap and doesn't even need a purchased ticket.

  • That was so odd to me when we flew with Emma.  I kept waiting for someone to ask for her birth certificate.  At least it shows I have a daughter in her general age.  It really does seem like such a big loophole.

Hmm......that's weird because I paid for Ava to sit on my lap but she still needed a plane ticket which was validated by her passport. Maybe this only applies to international travel but she definitely needed a plane ticket. But if this is the case in the US, I agree it is quite astounding.

Also, Ava and I have two different last names and I never had a problem, no questions asked. But I agree with others, I would get a notarized letter just in case.

International you pay the taxes of a ticket for a child. Domestic they ride for free/ no tickets but when kids get closer to two lookswise they begin to require Id to prove there age and you aren't trying to get them on for free
  • Yeah I was pretty much shocked yesterday to realize that you don't need jack shiit to prove that a kid belongs to you when flying domestically.

Yea, I'm a bit nervous to say the least. But they've never really been a way from their DD, and since we are all basically going on their honeymoon, I encouraged them to goto PR for the week before hadn for some much needed alone time. She's a good kid with me, so I'm hoping all will go ok.

This will be my kids, my niece, and her grandfathers first time EVER on a plane. I plan to bring snacks, snacks, snacks, and movies. It's a 7pm flight, so maybe (haha, yea right!) they will all pass out. There are a total of 21 of us (family and friends) going on the same flight and booked our seats/rows altogether, so I definitely will have help.

Just say a prayer for me! haha

Thank you!!! I said this yesterday after I found out. While I was relieved a bit that we wouldn't run into trouble, I immediately felt like WTF. That means someone can take my kid, get on a plane and thats it. I don't like that at all.

Haha, LD, I was thinking the same thing.  I am travelling to WA with my 10 nieces and nephews under 11 years old (and their parents) all on the same flight...I might cry.  And I really might use my miles to upgrade my seat to first class!  I definitely feel for everyone else on that flight!

  • There are 5 kids going with us. My 3 (ages 10, 3, and 1), my niece (4yo) and another little girl who is (5yo). I'm more worried about how the "grown" adults will act. I think we actually have most of the back of the plane. meh. we'll see what happens.
