How far do you walk...

...in an average day?

I'm curious if "city" people walk more than others.

You can use this site to measure how far you walk different places and add them up.

My walking commute to work is 0.58mi and to home is 0.93...which makes for about 1.5 miles.

I don't walk much around my office, but if it's not too cold/hot, I'll walk/do errands on lunch that may add up to another mile of walking

Re: How far do you walk...

  • I mostly drive in Houston. When I am in Europe for work (one time for a month) I did a lot of walking. And spending a summer on loan to a university in Boston, I walked there a lot to. Houston is too spred out and hot to walk much. It does make a difference where you live.
  • I walk from my car to work (maybe 100 yards).  lmao

So, maybe 200 yards per day of straight walking.  I have no idea how much I walk around like while I'm at work.

  • Well I drive to work, and the walk to my car is extremely short lol. I have been taking walks with H after work and i measured it out to 3.2 miles for one lap. sometimes we decide to do 2 laps (very rare!) and we usually both go shopping after the walk where we do some walking there. I don't usually walk around the office since it is so small. ;)

  • My bus stop is right around the corner from my house, and the bus drops me off .2 miles from my office.  I walk around quite a bit at work when I'm on program, but otherwise, not so much.

We don't have a car, though, so we typically walk to the grocery store/Starbucks in good weather and each of them are 1/2 mile away.  I've been getting off the bus earlier, so that I walk the last 1/2-1 mile home when the weather cooperates. And we each take the dog out a couple of times a day, which is usually 1/4-1/2 mile (depending on how quickly he goes).  When I think about how much I used to drive, I just shake my head. I drove EVERYWHERE, even when I first moved to the Boston area.  But now, I prefer to walk (unless the weather is bad). We walked from Fenway to Cambridge on Sunday (probably just over 1.5 miles), and it was nothing.  The apartments for our program participants are just over the river, and it's 10 minute walk. The amount of balking people do is amazing.

  • Erica- you sound similar to us, except that I'm guilty of driving to the grocery store (even though it's about 6 blocks away) b/c DH refuses to come with.

I never think twice about walking somewhere and then always feel bad if we have guests/family in town and they're huffing and puffing to keep up. Whoops!

  • Yeah, the only issue with walking to the grocery store is that we end up making multiple trips in a week.  We try to make one main trip together on the weekend, but we usually only get enough to last until Tuesday or Wednesday.

There's a store along the bus route home that we'll stop at sometimes, (if the weather is bad, or if we need wine/beer), but I find it more frustrating to wait for 2 buses than to just walk home from the other store. (Our bus route ends right in front of it.) We also get a Zipcar every so often, so we stock up on essentials/bigger items at BJs/Target to cut down on the lugging. Oh, and we started getting some fruits/veggies delivered from Boston Organics every other week, so that helps, too.

And I'm totally guilty of making people walk further than they expect, so I feel your pain. I've often said things like, "it's only a mile away!" and their heads explode, heh.

  • I walk down the hall to the bathroom, about 15 steps, and then down the stair to the car about 50 steps and to the car about 20 steps and then drive to work. At work I bet it is 100 steps max from the car to the door and then to my desk maybe 100 more. So in short, I am lazy!

  • I walk quite a bit at work some days.  Depending on what my classes are doing or what I am teaching that day, I sometimes just make laps around the room going from group to group, student to student.  I also walk everywhere at school, lots of times instead of sending an e-mail or making a phone call to the treasurer or librarian (which are in the adjoining building) I walk there to talk to them.

Most days we walk the dogs too and that is usually about 2 miles.

Not much...I walk to and from our apartment to my car which is about 100 feet, then it's about 1/3 mile from where I park at work to my desk, so I do that twice a day, and then just a little around the office.  I need to join the gym again but since we're planning on moving in December, I don't want to start my membership just to cancel it in a few months bc the apartments we're hoping to move into have their own gym.

    So yeah...I'm pretty lazy.

I like to walk to and from the bus station each day for school so I can sleep in a bit later.  I walk 1.56 km each way (0.97 miles x 2 = 1.94 miles).  Matt and I usually walk to the river each day to try to feed ducks or just walk around.  We don't go every day, though, but do get out about 4 times a week on average.  That little walk is about 1.5 miles total.  One day on the weekends (usually sunday) we walk to the lake which is another 1.5 miles there and 1.5 back.
