Help Choosing OB/Hospital

Hi All!  I'm new here (well, not to the area but to this board).  I just moved back up from the Cayman Islands, and am 17 wks.  I don't know whether to choose Abington Memorial Hospital or Holy Redeemer, and will base my OB choice off of the hospital I want to deliver in.

If anyone has any input on where to go, or who to choose, I would love the input!  Thanks!  Look forward to being up here!

Re: Help Choosing OB/Hospital

  • 100% abington over holy redeemer. i delivered both kids at  abington and had great experiences. also, no complaints from friends. i heard two horror stories about holy redeemer.
  • You are going to hear bad things no matter what hospital you look into.  Personally, I've heard the absolute worst post birth story I've ever heard about someone I know who delivered at Abington.  Bad stuff can happen every where.

I am delivering at HR, but this is my first and I'm not due until October.  One thing I can tell you is that HR is a Catholic hospital and apparently the doctors there will not tie your tubes after birth, if you should so choose.

  • My OB/GYN is Abington Primary Women's Healthcare group. I delivered Bella at Abingotn and have nothing but RAVE reviews. The nurses were amazing there. And since Bella was born at 33 weeks, she had to spend time in the NICU which was top notch. I don't know what I would have done without the awesome nurses in the NICU. That would be one thing I would compare between hospitals as a "just in case". Hopefully your DC wouldn't need it, but it's always good to be prepared.

  • I was deciding between Abington and another hospital for who I wanted my OBGYN to be for when we do have a baby - I chose the other hospital over Abington because they are a teaching hospital and tend to 'schedule' deliveries a bit more to make room for new patients (a doctor friend who works at Abington actually told me this) and I was looking at having a natural birth.   With that said however, if I ended up having multiples or high risk I would go to Abington soley because of their amazing NICU.
  • Just remember that you don't need to be high risk for your child to end up early or in the NICU.  It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Oh definitely.  I just want to be a in natural birth friendly hospital, and didn't get the impression Abington was.

  • I delivered at Abington 10 months ago today (sniffle, sniffle, my baby is getting so big!)...I went in having a great pregnancy and normal water breaking, etc., and wound up with a horrific time pushing, trying vacuuming the baby out, and going to emergency c-section.  So, like Lando said, you don't always know when you could need emergency/NICU care.  I loved Abington- they were wonderful and respectful of my wishes and what I was comfortable with.  Although my delivery itself wasn't ideal for me, the way it was handled- and the follow-up care- was impeccable.

A friend delivered at HR last November.  Nurses didn't keep her up to date on her baby, they returned him while I was there from the nursery with TWO diapers on- instead of changing him, they just threw another one on top!- and it was actually dirty when I went there.
