charities that take furniture?

The Salvation Army just rejected our couch for one of the cushions being stretched a bit in one part.  Anyone know other charities I can call to get them to take it away?

Re: charities that take furniture?

  • Purple heart and the lupus foundation i think.
  • Habitat for Humanity takes furniture I believe. They have a store called ReStore, you can probably give them a call to take it.
  • Goodwill. I think they will even pick it up for you.
  • Habitat for Humanity will come and pick it up and leave a receipt for your taxes

Purple Heart sent me an email referring me to the Salvation Army.

Lupus will only pick up wooden furniture - nothing with leather or upholstery.

I have a call in for Monday pickup, but they want us to move it outside and put it on the sidewalk.

I also put it on freecycle, so I'll call and cancel if it's gone before then.

Goodwill has a long waiting list for their free pickup service - up to 3 months.  And they have a minimum of what they will pick up (8 bags of clothing!).

However, their 48hr Priority pickup is calling me back to see if we can schedule something -    catch is, I don't know how much  that is - there's definitely a fee.  From their website:

    48 Hour Priority Pick-up Service

Goodwill will provide you with 48 Hour Priority Pickup Service through a new partnership with a local hauling service. This priority service charges a fee but includes additional benefits such as the removal of items from anywhere inside your property, as well as the removal of junk and items Goodwill cannot accept. Donors will receive a discount off the regular pricing of our hauling partner. Your donation is still tax-deductible when using our 48hour priority service.

So even if they decide our little stretched cushion isn't sellable, at least they will take it away. Geesh, who thought this would be that hard?!?

  • As much as I prefer to donate to charity, I think this may be a time for freecycle.  Post it and leave it outside....
