Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

Desirability index?

I was wondering what resources any of you have used to check the desirability of a neighborhood or city before you move there? I tried doing a Google search but I don't think I'm using the right terminology, 'cause it came out with squat.

Re: Desirability index?

  • Hmmm, I know you can find information rating the school systems online. Maybe you just need to look at individual categories, like schools, crime rate, or property taxes. I can't think of another wording for general "desireability".
  • I looked at school district rankings and ratings, checked the community info on the real estate websites (they had stats for crime, weather, income, etc) and I read about the communities on wikipedia (surprisingly thorough!).

  • I call the PD to check crime rate. Haven't had to check out schools yet, but a simple Google would be easy. That's all I'd think about checking.
  • Thanks for the ideas ladies Smile! I hadn't thought about checking real estate or school listings!
  • If walkability is important to you, you should check those scores too.  Google maps, among other things, rates communities that way.

Oooo, actually it is, since where we live right now is NOT pedestrian friendly, especially for a stroller.

Yeah, here it is a big deal because of the public transport system.  The neighborhood where I live is like 99%, and it is only that low because we don't have a full service grocery store within .25mi, only a WF (which I guess is considered specialty grocery?).
