getting scratches out of wood table

I have the basque dining table from crate and barrel:

 http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/dining-tables/basque-honey-82%22-dining-table/s180378

On the maintenance instructions, it says to remove scratches, rub with 0000 extra fine steel wool, then use a furniture wax paste.

I'm really afraid to take steel wool to scratches! Has anyone done this? Does it really work? I would think it would remove the surface layer and make things worse...

Re: getting scratches out of wood table

  • Are you trying to fill scratches because they're indented?  Or are you trying to mask discoloration caused by going past the surface varnish of the wood?  If there are severe indentations, you can use wood filler and then stain the scratches.  If you just want to cover up a color difference, get some Old English Scratch Cover from target or something.  They sell a dark and a light, although, in my experience, the light covers up most everything and the dark is for very, very dark stains only.

  • I agree I old English my table about once every six months to help with scratches.

  • The table has a waxed finish, furniture polish will ruin it. 0000 steel wool is extremely fine, rub lightly with the grain then rewax. It will be fine! The instructions are to make sure you can care for it properly, kind of like washing instructions on clothing. Smile
  • You could try plain old regular toothpaste also.  Try on the underside first, but it is just abrasive enough to get light scratches out.
