any bank tellers out there?
I have an interview Monday for a teller position. I've never worked in a bank before and was wondering what I should expect. Any info is appreciated- Thanks!
Re: any bank tellers out there?
I worked at a bank for 6 years (high school til end of my college years) because they offered me a good scholarship and even though working at the bank had nothing do with my major, I continued working there as a part time employee for years. This is over a decade ago so things might have changed.
As far as I remember, I initially was given a paper test that had behavioral, mathematical and ethical questions. Then I had an in person interview, mostly behavioral questions, then I went through 2 weeks of teller training (even though I had learned it onsite, I had to go to the training for it to be official).
So if you're having an in person interview expect many behavioral and ethical questions where they'd give you a scenario or problem and ask you how you'd go about it. Things you want to emphasize are:
1. attention to details (since you'll be dealing with money and sensitive documents), you're dealing with money so it's really important that you're accurate.
2. good customer service skills.
3. quick thinker/problem solver/trouble shooting skills, since you'll come across people and problems that you're not taught about in training. customers want answers and they want them right then and there, you'll have to have a can-do attitude and be able to think/solve problems quickly.
4. this is one I hated. sales. they want you to sell products. they'll set goals for you and want you to meet them and should you not meet selling those credit cards, personal loans, checking and saving accounts, it'll reflect negatively on your review so they want someone who is motivated to sell products.
I think those are the main things you should expect to talk about in your interview.
i hope this helps.
At my branch, they are really big on EXCELLENT customer service, high energy people.. And like the previous poster said, sales. We have to meet a quarterly goal on our sales, and in return we get a bonus every quarter. Obviously basic math is a given, but I never had to take a test or anything.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
I'm late to chime in on this, but honeydew's answer was excellent. Like her, I worked in a bank for 5 years, throughout college, and for the year following my college graduation (both as a teller and in an admin. asst. capacity). My original interview was long ago, but I do remember behavioral, ethical type questions being asked. They want you to demonstrate good customer service, quick thinking, ethics/integrity (obviously trustworthiness handling large sums of cash), and sales ability/ability to upsell when needed.
Good luck!
