What are you pregnancy must haves?

One of my best friends just found out she is pregnant with her and her husband's first child. I wanted to put together a little basket or package of pregnancy related type items. I have never been pregnant myself so I have no experience with this. Also I can't ask any in real life people because they aren't supposed to know about the pregnancy yet. So I am ask for you all's help.

What were your favorite pregnancy items or must haves? I am trying to keep the package under $40 so try to tell me lower cost items.

Re: What are you pregnancy must haves?

  • Bibs, onesies or a few items of clothing in general, socks, burp cloths, swaddle blankets, some toys are cheap. Some sheets can be cheap. This all depends on where you shop. Why not wait until they prepare a registry?
  • How far along is she? I'd personally wait on any gifts until she gets past the first trimester, just in case she (God forbid) has a miscarriage; she wouldn't want a pregnancy gift sitting around to compound the pain.

But a spa gift card would be a good gift, as she'll probably be feeling icky. Gift cards to Cold Stone Creamery or similar. A Bee/Bella Band.

Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • saltine crackers, antacids, ice pack, heating pad, belly belt, maternity stretchie tank top, flip flops, herbal tea.

Not that glamorous but she'll get a kick out of it and use it all.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.

    Preparation H and Tucks.

  • hot water pad/bottle, extra strengh tylenol, crackers, and a pregnancy pillow (it's a long pillow you sleep with since you can't sleep on your stomache). other stuff can be a gift certificate to babys r us or a salon or a book store

    so nice of you!

This. I bought my best friend and her husband a congrats card a few weeks after she told me they were pregnant, and the day before I mailed it she called and told me she miscarried....I would have felt bad if I had sent it/gifts for the baby already.

I might add some really nice lotion or body butter...Skin can suddenly get very dry during pregnancy, and it'll help with the itching of skin stretching later.  Maybe a gift card for a bookstore or maternity clothing store, too?

I plan on waiting much much closer to get baby items. I was asking for pregnancy items. Thanks though!

This is exactly the type of stuff I was hoping for, but didn't know what to get. A few inexpensive, useful, or even funny things that I could give her as a care package. Thanks for the help!!!

Thanks for the suggestions! Once again exactly what I was looking for!!! I wasn't sure what all medicines were allowed/ not allowed so thanks for saying the extra strength tylenol because thats something I would not have done.

I was really wanting to get her a first trimester care package. Something to get her through the morning sickness and body changes she is currently experiencing. In my opinion, she is telling people and talking to me about it. It just says to me she wants to celebrate it and I want to share in that excitement with her and show her that I care. My personal choice if the situation were reversed would be to wait a good couple months before sharing my news, but that doesn't make her wrong, the woman is just ready to celebrate now. Consequences of an early announcement may come (like the above mentioned congrats card) and I would not want to cause my friend any pain by having her see baby things, but I also don't want to cause her any pain currently by seeming uncaring or unsupportive instead of joining in on the growing excitiement with her.

I am hoping to make a package of things that don't scream baby or really say baby at all. I am thinking about something along the lines mentioned above.... Some lotion, antiacids, saltines, extra stregth tylenol, and some herbal tea. Things she will use/ need during this time, but not something that would be a painful reminder should something happen. I am still debating a maternity tank top or a baby name book (or some book along those pregnancy lines). I know she would be estatic to recieve either of those right now, but I'm unsure if its too early for something so exclusively pregnancy/ baby related.

So now that its clear what type of a care package I am putting together, I am interested in hearing thought on items. Especially in regards to the maternity tank, pregnancy book, or baby name book.

Sorry if I was not very clear on this before!

  • Most women don't outgrow their normal clothes in the first trimester (so I didn't hit my maternity tanks until six or seven months), but the Bella Band is great if they do start to get tight. A pregnancy book is also good; even if something unfortunate does happen, she's pregnant now, and she'll have all sorts of questions about what's normal and what's safe.

But yes, ginger ale, saltines, Tums. Maybe something fun like a book of mocktail recipes? If she has a favorite tea or coffee, a decaf version would be a nice touch, too. (A lot of pregnant women keep drinking some caffeine, but I found it messed with my already difficult body, so having the decaf option has been really nice.)

  • A cute book is "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy".

You can get the PG Tank top in any maternity shop. It's stretchy, so it will grow with the belly bump, inexpensive, and comfortable.

I just used the internet for baby names.

  • Books:

So That's What They're For (if she's talking about breastfeeding).

    Belly Laughs (by Jenny McCarthy)

    Supplies:

Preggie pops (available at Motherhood Maternity, BRU etc)

any sour candies (lemonheads are good, pretzels, ginger ale)

    Other:

A journal for her to record her pregnancy (I did that for my first. LOVE it)

    An ultrasound picture frame

just some ideas. hope it helps. Congrats to your friend.

ETA: I haven't been on the nest in years. My ticker says expecting #2 - um, she's 2.5 LOL

  • Get a Boppy pregnancy pillow.. It's a little wedge that supports your belly when you're lying on your side. It's heaven.

You can get one at Motherhood Maternity, BRU, probably Amazon for around $15.

  • Hopefully not the case for your friend, but morning sickness can last on into the second trimester, so the items would be still used.  A good item that helped me was the "Sea Bands" - you can get those at CVS, Walgreens, etc.

An alternative idea to a sleeve of saltines is individual packs of saltine crackers, or individual packs of oyster crackers.  That way she can keep them in her desk drawer, purse, or next to her night stand and not have to worry about them getting stale.

I also would have LOVED to have had a gift card to a maternity wear store, those clothes are expensive for no longer than you wear them.

  • Stretchy pants!!! Ok, not exactly a gift item.. I like the idea of a cute over night bag to take to the hospital or birthing center, book store gift card, or salon (she'll want to do something with her new thick hair or nails). Body butters are always a good idea....a belly band is good, as well as like some cute Old navy maternity clothes or gift cards to those sort of places.
