My husband (still giddy about saying that!) and I got married 3 days ago and live in a very, very small condo. It is under 700 square feet and is one bedroom. This used to be my place, but now he moved in. I am wondering if there is any sort of organizational tips any of you have for storing all of our stuff. We don't have that much place and are running out of room for clothes and everything. Help!
Re: Can we survive this??
Donate any clothing/shoes of yours that you don't love and ask him to do the same. Get receipts for the donations. If you itemize, they can be tax deductible.
Host a yard sale for the excess household goods. It is amazing what people will buy for a few dollars. Don't overprice your former things, you no longer need them
Put the bed on risers and add underbed boxes and those vacuum the air out type of bags for offseason clothing. Use decorative storage as ottomans, nightstands and side tables. Be prepared to compromise on the things he loves (even when they are ugly).
My DH & I had his and her houses/condos until we moved into his small (900 sq foot) condo. It is tough; but I love him and he's worth it.
I have a few organizing tips for small spaces in my blog- my hubs, LO and I live in a 1100 sq. ft. place with two dogs and a cat
.
Basically, live simply- purge items you don't need. That is the biggest tip I can give you.

Purge, Purge, and Purge. Until everything has a home.
I use all the space I can. Think up! There was alot of unused space in our closets- we added shelves above the shelves and had twice the storage.
Also plastic tubs under beds, in closets, and under counters.
A Label maker may seem a little neurotic- but I love mine bc I know which container has what and I don't have to pull them all down or open them all to get what I want.
Good Luck!
When we thought we'd be living in a 650 sq ft place for a while (only did it for about 3-4 months)... we just sucked it up. And I lived out of suitcases. However, if we weren't able to sell the condo... I had a plan in place after being there for those 3 months.
1. Have DH "move out." Not really move out, but have him pack up his stuff like he was going to move. Then have us move back in together and decide together where things should go. It was very much his place, and while he doesn't buy much, he keeps everything!! Some would have had to go, at least into storage.
2. I planned to buy 2-3 Pax wardrobes from Ikea to use in the living room to expand our storage space.
3. I planned to buy shelves for the storage unit and planned to organize & purge things from there as well.
4. Look for unused storage space, as others suggested. DH had a kitchen cabinet that had two big bulky empty boxes... that cabinet was able to fit my kitchenaid and prep bowls once I cleaned it out. Determine what you really need/use on a daily basis and purge purge purge like others have suggested!!
We have moved into a house- but it's still a small house. I am constantly getting rid of things and making everything more efficient.
And I agree with lableing everyhing!! It makes it so much easier to keep organized. I am even thinking of labeling the shelves in our kitchen cupboards.
And keep receipts. I took back so many things we registered for once I realized I would never really use them and that we didn't have space.
