Anyone have insurance experience?
I am looking at moving from my current retail career into insurance sales. I have a part time offer to work with employee benefits insurance for small companies. Has anyone had any experience with this field?
Also, how hard was the exam to become licensed? Did you prepare on your own or did you take a class?

I'm currently in insurance (property and casualty), but I'm actually leaving the field to go work with a non-profit.
The exam wasn't very difficult. I took a class online through National Alliance and they sent me a "textbook" to help prepare with. I took the test within a few weeks and was ready to go on my own.
My husband just started as an agent this year. He's one of those guys who can get by without studying and he just barely passed. In CT it is a very hard test, they even let you retake the class for free if you fail the test. There are others in his agency that took a number of times to pass. But that shouldn't stop you what-so-ever, everyone's different!
The pay is good but is a struggle the first 1-2 years. The more people you know and the more you advertise the better you do. It is a completely different field for my husband but he loves it, he can do it from anywhere.
I have my health insurance license. I thought the exam was difficult but I studied hours upon hours and memorized everything and passed with flying colors. I hear the Life exam is even harder. I have my license in 5 states and luckily all are reciprocal states where I didn't have to take another exam.
My company sent me for the pre-licensing class (required in PA) and paid for the exam. If your company requires you to get licensed, I bet they will send you to a class and pay for everything.
Personally, I think that they way you are doing it -- working with small groups -- is the best way to start. Hopefully your company will train you on how to prospect, do presentations and close deals. I like working with small agencies over the giant ones anyday.
FYI -- I work directly for an insurer and even though I don't do direct sales (I do group implementation), I go to many finalist meetings to help with the sale.
