How about just visiting for a wknd? HELP

I'm coming to Austin for my 31st bday this weekend, arrive Sat and leave Sunday evening.  Its been about 10 years since we have lived there for school, and our interests have "matured" since then (basically we don't care about 6th street).  What are your recommendations for the best things to do, places to eat for a quick trip?  We are staying at the Aloft @ The Domain, but that doesn't mean we have to stay out there.  We have discussed visiting the winery in Lago Vista saturday afternoon, and will definitely see the bats.  WHAT ELSE?  And where is a great place for my bday dinner (no seafood)?!  Thanks ladies!

  • Just an FYI... not sure if you are aware or maybe you already know and might be into this sort of thing... but the ROT Rally is this weekend.

If you are staying in the domain then you can eat dinner at Flemings in the Domain.  It's one of my favorites.  I've also heard good things about Cru- a wine bar, also in the Domain.

I'm not sure what you are looking to do so I don't have any suggestions for that.

  • There are a lot of great restaurants in the domain: Cru, Jasper's, North, etc. The ROT rally is going on, but they'll be downtown and by the expo center, so other than extra motorcycles on the road, it shouldn't affect you too much, unless you want it to! :) The Flying Saucer is a great bar near 45/Lamar, and there are a number of good wine bars in town.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • If you're looking for something outdoorsy my favorite places in Austin to pack a picnic and go swimming:

Hamilton Natural Water Preserve is nice to visit if you don't mind the drive.  It's best to get there before 10:30 on the weekends though.

    Similar is Krause Springs:

It's a little further but you wouldn't have to get there quite as early to get a good spot on the weekend.  We like this place much better than Hamilton Pool unless you're wanting to do some hiking too.  Then Hamilton is the way to go.
