Wednesday QOTD

When selecting a college/university, what helped you make your decision (location, price, major, etc) and how many/which schools did you visit and decide against?

  • I grew up knowing I would go to FSU.

  • After visiting several large schools with my sister (Ohio State, Ohio Univ., Univ of Tennessee and Indiana Univ), I knew I wanted to go to a smaller school. Since my dad's a Lutheran Pastor, my parents suggested looking into those schools since they got a small tuition reduction and tried to keep me from having much loan debt.

I looked at Capital Univ. and Wittenberg in Ohio, but knew I wanted to go further away. They originally had a 4 hour limit, but I got them to agree to Lenoir-Rhyne Univ. in NC, about 7 hours away, because I fell in love with NC and felt really at home there.

  • I didn't go to college/university. I planned to go to University of West Florida but that didn't pan out.

  • Location. I only applied to one and never even visited because I grew up down the street.

  • At first I only applied to UCF and FSU because my parents wanted me to go to school outside of Jacksonville (I am pretty sure they wanted me to get away from the guy I was dating).  I got into both schools and decided to go to FSU.  My mom and I visited and were going to get me registered for a dorm and I freaked out and said I didn't want to leave Jax. My mom said, "But you didn't even apply to UNF" and I said "That's because you wouldn't let me".  I applied and got in and that's where I wound up going.

  • UNF was far enough away from my parents that they couldn't drop in, but close enough that they could save me if I got homesick. Or ran out of money.Plus UNF looked like Sea World to me when I was 17 and that was pretty sweet.
  • For undergrad I knew I was going to go to one of the state schools in FL since I had a bright futures scholarship and would essentially go for free. I ended up deciding on UNF because I had just moved to Jax a year prior to HS graduation and didn't want to move again. I won't deny that DH may have also been a factor.

For grad school, I applied to schools in the south (in states I would consider living in) that had reputable I-O programs. Then once I was accepted I compared the offers from each school and picked the one that combined the best offer with quality, location, and cost of living. That's how I ended up in Clemson.

One of the dorms has a lazy river. It practically IS Sea World.

  • I wanted to major in nursing so I applied to 3 or 4 schools in MD that had nursing programs.  I then decided to start at Community College after I graduated because I was scared to go away to school.

My boyfriend moved to Jacksonville about the time I needed to transfer so I applied to UNF and JU. My dad said JU was too expensive so I ended up at UNF.

  • That sh!t was built way after I graduated. Along with all of the other cool stuff. *shakes fist*
  • I had a scholarship that would pay for 2 yrs community college + 2 yrs university, so I knew I was going to spend my first 2 years at FCCJ or SJRCC. SJRCC was closer and smaller and I liked it better. When it came time to transfer, I talked to an advisor at UCF who really rubbed me the wrong way, so I decided against UCF. Looked at Gainesville and Tally, and finally talked to an advisor at UNF who I really liked. That's what sealed the deal that I was going to UNF.

  • My community college I chose because I was afraid of driving in the "city" (Panama City) so I went the the other one in the area. In the Navy I got my AS from the college that offered the most online classes. Then I chose UNF because I lived like a mile from it. There ya go.

  • Money was my number one deciding factor. I got FL bright futures and UNF also offered me a scholarship. I could live at home for almost free, so I essentially was getting paid to go to school. I also can't deny that I wanted to stay in Jax because of my DH.

  • I knew I'd go to a state school since my bright futures scholarship paid for it.  I applied to UF, FSU, UNF and UCF and got into all 4.  I was 17 when I graduated and my parents didn't want me to go "away" to school and wanted me to do my first 2 years at the local community college, but I didn't think that was fair since I'd worked my butt off in HS to get good grades and all.. so we compromised on UNF for the first year, then I planned to transfer to FSU.  I ended up loving UNF and made some great friends, and the guy I was dating that went to FSU and I broke up, plus FSU didn't offer the degree program I wanted.. so I just stayed at UNF.

  • Location, I knew I couldn't handle a long distance relationship. I don't regret my decision.
  • Location and convenience. My dad taught at the Univ. of Tennessee, and I got 50% off tuition, so I went there. I actually wanted to go to culinary school, but my parents couldn't afford it, so my dad talked me into getting my bachelor's first and seeing how things went. I ended up loving my program there, even though it took me forever to finish (working at the same time). By the time I finished, I had met and married DH, and my culinary school plans got put aside at least for now.

  • Music scholarship ... and my mom kinda pushed me.
  • I screwed up. My only requirement was that it was far away from my family and on the beach in southern cali... so I chose the most expensive private art school possible and moved there without even visiting. Now i'm stuck paying more than our mortgage until I retire.

We kind of did this with DH's grad school. The program is only offered in 12 schools nationwide, so whoever accepts you is where you'll go. He ended up signing a contract with a school and then got 2 other offers. I don't know how much the price difference would have been though. But now we're looking at 30 years of loan payments for a balance about 1/2 our mortgage, ugh.

    I'm sorry. That sucks. Bad.

  • Cornell, Colgate, and Columbia were my top 3 choices for a while (Columbia because I would have been a legacy there and Cornell because of their great hospitality management program), but I couldn't get over the cost of tuition, even with scholarship money, and the cold winters, having to travel hundreds of miles back home to see my family, etc.  So ultimately I just decided to go to UCF.  They offered me a full ride, it was close, and they had a brand new hospitality campus with a wine and beer lab which was super appealing (not that it mattered in the end because I was only a hospitality major for one semester lol).  I was very happy with my choice because I received an excellent education, and the campus is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!  The only other schools in FL that I visited were UF and Flagler, and their campuses couldn't even touch UCF in terms of amenities.

  • i applied to and got into ucla, ucsandiego, ucberkeley, usc and duke. at the time i was looking for a biomedical engineering program and all those schools had one.  i ended up going to usc because i got a full ride there so it ended up being the cheapest. i also ended up switching my major to business and their busnd the business school is great so it worked out well. sometimes though i wish i would have gone to cal.
  • I applied to 6 or 7 schools scattered all over the place. I was hardcore into my emo days at this point and already had hippy roots, so I knew it would be a private liberal arts school. My #1 was Reed in Oregon... because it was in Oregon and straight-up fulla hippies. Never visited, though. It's possible I didn't get in, not sure... I don't remember how many I got accepted to, but there were really only 2 in the running -- Goucher in MD and Dickinson in PA. Goucher is a great school with awesome bio programs, and Dickinson is too. Dickinson gave me more of the college "vibe" I was so desperate to have (read: hipster). I bawled my little emo eyes out bec we couldn't afford Dson. We accepted the offer to Goucher and I simultaneously wrote a woe-is-me/begging email to Dson which miraculously resulted in them throwing a bucket of money at me. So there I went.

I think I had opportunities there that I wouldn't have otherwise. But I still wish I'd gone to Rutgers in NJ (the state school). I probably never would've met DH or any of  you lovely ladies... but I wouldn't have any loans either. lol

  • Oh, man... I don't even remember which ones I applied to. Definitely FSU and UNF, with Yale thrown in for the hell of it (I'd gotten the Yale Alumni Book Award in my Junior year so why not). Seems like there was one other one tossed in there.

I didn't want to attend JU because my parents had gone there and it was a mile from their house so I resisted with all my might. It wasn't nearly as nice then as it is now. My brother did amazingly well there but he's so technical that the small classes really helped bring out his personality. I wanted a school larger than the private schools I'd been brought up in, but not as large as UF.

I really wanted to attend FSU and get away, but ultimately UNF offered me a full ride and wrote a check for what I didn't use, so that was where I was going. I don't regret the choice. Since it was largely a commuter school at the time, I got a good education and a lot of work experience instead of a college lifestyle experience. While that doesn't appeal to a lot of people, it suited me. I did live at home to avoid spending all the money, since there wasn't quite enough for dorms and food, but I was rarely there from being so busy.

I did not, however, finish my masters in English there that I started because it is a little too small to allow for a real focus in any one topic. You have (or had) to take a variety of courses even if you already knew your area of interest, and I didn't want that.

  • I applied and got into Liberty, which was my number 1 choice, but money turned out being the deciding issue, and I ended up at FCCJ.
