Re: Gay marriage clicky poll
I've got to be honest. I really don't get all the opposition. Ok, well I get it, but it seems so silly. I know people (namely - Christians in particular, but not exclusively) cite the bible verse about laying with a man as a woman as an abomination, but do people not realize that the bible is man's interpretation of God's word?
Note: I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school for 12 years, received 4 of the 7 sacraments and will most like have this kid baptized before we decide which religious route we're going to take. It's just one of the many inconsistincies I find ridiculous within the Chuch's teachings.
My little nuggets
I have yet to hear a good reason why gay marriage should NOT be legalized.
I don't think what the bible says should factor into why something is or is not legal. There are lots of things in the bible that we go ahead and ignore, like doing the sessytime with a chick on the rag, but yes, let's just go ahead and pick and choose when we want to follow the bible and keep two people of the same sex from getting married.
Also, the whole "well what's next, bestiality and pedophilia being legalized?" That makes me stabby... what part of "two consenting adults" is hard to differentiate from those other circumstances?
Plus the rights that they don't have... I'm not going to go into it because I will mess it up, but all the next of kin stuff that gay couples don't have.... stuff about making deathbed decisions, what happens to children of these couples when the bio parents dies, etc. I can think of way more reasons to legalize than to keep it from being legalized.
I was holding off on commenting because I was really hoping someone with a contradictory opinion would jump in, but I doubt that will happen. I have two major issues.
1. Separation of church and state. The legalization of gay marriage would not require any church or other religious institution to perform marriages. One shouldn't have anything to do with the other.
2. Have we not learned from the past? In the not-so-distant past, interracial marriage was against the law. We look at that now as being unbelievably ridiculous and unfair (hopefully we all do). How is gay marriage any different? I truly believe that in 50 years we're going to look back and shake our heads at how backwards things were before the legalization of gay marriage. Unfortunately it's just taking some people much longer to get there.
I don't get the "civil union" term. It's not like religions own the word marriage.
People don't need to be wed in a specific religion to be considered married. Everyone needs the legal paperwork to be married, which is completely separate from the religous ceremony. Plenty of people have civil ceremonies and it's just valid as a religous one.
I do not believe the government can or should deny two consenting adults the right to marry. Religious institutions can refuse to marry or recognize the marriage of anyone they want.
So I'm very pro gay marriage.
This just popped up on Twitter, ha.
I think they should AT LEAST make up AEs if they are too scared to post under their real names. I need something to read.
