T&P needed for Lily

About a month ago Lily tweaked something in her right leg while tripping over Tomas running away from the vacuum cleaner (she's a bit of a ditz and a blonde :P) and limped for a day and then was fine.  Well, we had her at the boarders over the weekend while we were in Boston and she came maybe slightly limping on the same leg, but it was nothing serious.  Then, last night when we got home from work she was only walking on three legs.  We assumed that her and Tomas just played hard and she maybe aggravated it. She refused to climb the stairs and has been off her meals as well.  Well, she was still 3 legged this morning, so I took her into the vet.  She actually isn't injured.  Her lymph node behind her right knee is really inflamed and both her back knee joints are tender and have fluid.  She also has a slight fever.

We had a ton of bloodwork drawn and the vet thinks she has an auto immune disorder that has settled in her joints probably b/c of her previous injury.  The vet really suspects Lyme Disease.  I'm not sure what that means for a dog, so I'm off to Google, but if you can keep her in your T&P I'd appreciate it.  She really looks miserable.  She got a shot of Metacam to help with her pain and inflammation today (and we have some to give her in pill form starting tomorrow) and we have her on antibiotics as a precaution if it is Lyme disease.  We'll get the results tomorrow.

  • Poor Lily! Lyme Disease is pretty treatable (at least in humans, but I imagine dogs too). I wouldn't be surprised if that was it after you mentioning all the ticks around your place. I hope the antibiotics get her in tip top shape quickly!

I think it is pretty treatable after reading Dr. Google, but she could have lasting joint issues and arthritis and maybe recurrent flare ups like in humans.  It doesn't sound too scary.  I just HATE ticks and am kind of scared (and am totally grossed out) by them as I nearly died from a tick bite the summer of my 8th grade year when I got Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever.  We spray our yard for ticks, our dogs get the vaccine, AND they are on Frontline so I'm kind of shocked that it's even a possibility.

Going forward during prime tick season, since they are so bad here, we'll be rotating Frontline with Revolution every two weeks.

  • Aww, poor LIly! I hope she's back to her normal self soon!

A friend of mine growing up had a dog that had Lyme Disease...I'm sorry I don't have much more info then that...I was like 12. I think her dog got retested regularly and was on a medication for it...I could be wrong though.
