WWYD?

I posted yesterday that I have a phone interview today with a company for a corporate recruiting job. I have a friend who works there in HR who said that he would be calling today or tomorrow and that he was really busy and would probably call me today (Thursday). I was a little stressed about him not giving a day or time because of a work event we had last night had me super busy.

Well he called me at 8pm last night while I was driving home from a work event and I missed it. He left a VM simply saying to call him back. I called him back within 10 minutes and he put me on hold because he had a conference call. So I was on hold and the phone system prompted me to leave a voicemail so I did.

I don't want him to think I am a flake or anything but I don't want to seem desperate. Should I call him back today or wait for him to call me?

Re: WWYD?

  • I'd call back and say you just wanted to touch base since things were so busy last night.

  • I'd wait a good 24 hours and then call him back, just to make sure he got your VM. If he's calling you at 8pm, he's probably superbusy, so give him that bit of extra time.

    Good luck!

  • I would definitely call him.  It sounds like he's just an extremely busy person and you need to hunt him down in order to get some time with him.  I would be surprised if he'd be annoyed by another follow-up call from you.  It's perfectly reasonable that you want to get in touch with him before you interview.
  • Thanks for the feedback! I think if I do not hear from him by 3pm today I will call.

  • Yes. Call him back. But I have to say that his behavior with regard to him placing you on hold and kind of leaivng you hanging, is not really professional. Phone interviews should be scheduled so that the candidate has time to prepare and is not caught off gaurd. If he keeps stringing you along, I'd move on.
