Need mama insight: What to buy

Most of you guys know we didn't have a shower and really haven't registered for anything due to family traditions.

I do have a private wish list on babies r us and am compiling a list of things I need purchased for when I am in the hospital- for immediate use, knowing the other stuff I can order/have delivered/have people buy (our families are local).

This is what is on my list for my sister/H to buy...

Car Seat
Rock and Play Sleeper
Bouncy seat and or swing
Bassinet or PackNPlay with the bassinet and changing table attachments (baby will sleep here til the Crib and we'll get that when we're home)
Boppy pillow
Diaper Genie
2 Halo sleep sacks
Wash-clothes and Towels
Changing pad and several covers
Formula (assuming I do not BF)
Diapers (newborn size and size 1)
Bottles
baby mittens
Receiving blankets
A bunch of footed sleep n plays
Onesies
Hosp sends me home w/ first aid kit

What am I missing? We'll get/order the stroller and snap and go within the first few days....

 TIA :)

Re: Need mama insight: What to buy

  • Couple of things I think you DON'T have to worry about right away.  I could never get as comfortable using the Boppy Pillow as I did using a couple regular pillows.  That held true for when I was trying to breastfeed and when I was bottle feeding.  Our Boppy ended up being mainly used to prop Amelia up.  I also don't think you need the Rock and Play Sleeper, the swing and the bassinet/Pack 'n Play all right away.  We had Amelia sleeping in the Pack 'n Play for the first seven months and when she wasn't sleeping it that she slept in her swing.  Out of the three I suggest you wait and see if you even need the Rock and Play Sleeper in addition to the other two.

Don't forget to remind them that the Diaper Genie has it's own special bags that they will need to buy.  And don't forget baby wipes and baby shampoo/soap.  Other then that I think you're good.

  • I agree with Jennifer. I would recommend only getting the PNP first and see how it works out. May despised her swing so I'm very glad it was a gift. Also, a lot of the girls on my birth board had a reallllllly hard time transitioning from the RnP to the crib, so you might not want to even do that unless Baby A is having a hard time sleeping in the PnP.

Don't forget hooded towels, too! Bath supplies was the one thing I never thought of or realized I needed right away.

  • Not necessities but nice to have if you are bottle feeding - bottle brushes and a bottle sterilizer.  Not everyone uses these, but we really like having a bottle warmer.

Every baby is different.  We loved our swing. We have one for upstairs and one for downstairs.  Will still sometimes naps in it.  Worth every penny for us!

  • The only things not on the list that I can remember we used the first week was bottle brush, microwave sterilizer, pacifiers, baby bath tub (we got one with a newborn sling that kept him out of the water until his umbilical cord fell off), and baby soap and lotion.

  • I'd recommend the sleep sacks with the swaddle or the swaddlemes. I'd add a thermometer. We have a temporal one and use it often! Did in the very beginning too bc we were told to monitor C's temp.
  • Oh, you might want something that plays music to help baby sleep. Some PnPs and swings do, our monitor does, we also have the soothe and glow seahorse, other people have talked about the sleep sheep or a white noise machine.
  • Robert hated his swing, but loves the MamaRoo.

I also would not have survived without the Miracle Blanket.  I thought it was an overpriced gimmick, but seriously saved our sanity and got us some sleep.

    We never used an mittens.

And I LOVE our sleep giraffe (just like the sleep sheep).  Most babies seem to like some sort of noise.  There are a bunch of different options.

Gas drops-I don't believe these actually work, but Robert stop crying immediately because I think he liked the taste.

I also love the video monitor.  Isn't a necessity, but we have a light sleeper and I love being able to look at his, especially right after he transitioned from his crib.
