Bill to ban pit bulls in MI

Re: Bill to ban pit bulls in MI

  • This is sad!  I have 2 semi Pit's and they are the sweetest things and LOVE to cuddle!  They can be the best dogs and back in the day they were breed for babysitting and looking after children!   Its all in how they are raised, and now a days they have a bad image because of the morons that fight them and breed them to fight!

My lil guy came from an abandoned home in Detroit and was breed to be "bait" and I cuddle with him every night telling him how lucky he is to have found the best doggy home!!

  • I know three pit bulls and all three of them are the sweetest dogs I know.  When I worked in an animal hospital I was bitten only once and it was by a poodle. Never a pittie.

The ones I know that are terrified of the breed usually have never met one.

  • I agree with your 100%.  I have 9 "Shih Tzu's" behind me (no offense to anyone that owns these) but they are ankle bitters and they drive me crazy!  They will literally bit my dogs legs and come to attack my feet as my dogs sit down in the yard and not fight back!

There are many other breeds that have "mauled" kids/people before and they are still ok in everyone's eyes!

  • I've also only known wonderfully sweet pits (or pit mixes).  The only problem I've found with the one's I know is they don't tend to know their own strength - so I don't think I'd let them play around my (future) small children.  They're not mean but could certainly knock kids down hard when they're playing.

DH has been bitten by a dog once before - it was a chihuahua.

  • Way to go Waterford Twp...Way to go.  Glad my tax dollars are going to something great....FAIL.

So it says that the people in waterford are much safer because of this ban...???  Then what about that mutt mix of a dog that attacked my dog while we were walking.  It was not a pitbull.  I know of at least 5 pits in my neighborhood and they are all awesome mutts.  It is all about the owners and training.

I agree, but that is true of any large dog. Heck, I have been knocked down by an over-excited lab before.  That's the point, any dog can be sweet, mean, bumbling, etc.  It is always smart to watch your kids around dogs.  Any dog.

Ditto...my 45lb dog can knock me over.  Honestly most dogs don't know their own strength or size.  My mom's 110lb dog knocks things over all the time with his rear and tail.  He gets the saddest face when it happens.

Again it is all about the owners and how they train their pets.  To each their own when it comes to a kid and a dog, but don't discriminate a breed because of their stereotype.  Know that particular dog's background, owner and temperament before letting your kid around the dog. Period.

I am not trying to be snarky or rude.  Here is a good blog from a pestie on the subject:  http://babiesandbeasts.blogspot.com/

  • The only dog I've ever been bitten by was a Dacshund. My friend posted an article on FB that the most common dog bites come from Chihuahuas, Dacshunds, and Jack Russells.

The a-hole across the street from our old house had a beautiful pitbull. I highly doubt the dog was treated very well, but I always saw it (no clue if it's male/female) chasing it's own tail. lol It was always well behaved when it was loose on the front lawn (not a fan of that with any pet though).

I was also walking Nelly on Beech Daly/6 Mile when a pit bull climbed over the 4 ft fence and ran at us. I was more scared of Nelly's reaction than what this dog was going to do. If ANY dog did that, I'd be worried! Thankfully, all the pittie wanted to do was sniff her butt. I was even more relieved that Nelly didn't attack the dog!

Anyways...this is a really unfortunate situation & the breed should not be banned.

I don't know if this was directed at me, or just in general, but I don't find it snarky or rude.  I was personally saying I wouldn't let my kids around the pits I know while they were playing - even if I was supervising.  These particular dogs are just really serious about their play time, lol (as, I'm sure, plenty of other dogs & breeds are too).  And I totally agree that any large dog can throw their weight around.

  • That is horrible.  Why don't we just ban the owners of these dogs(the ones trained to be viscious) because they are the ones that raised those dogs to be mean.  I know a few people who have pit bulls and they are very friendly dogs with both children and adults because they raised them to be friendly.    Sometimes it's all in how you raise a dog.  If we allow them to start banning one dog then they'll just move onto another dog and then before we know it no one will be able to have any type of dog in their house.
  • this makes me so sad! We have fostered 3 pitt mixes and they are amazing! My brother has one now
