Need thermometer recs

Does anyone have a good thermometer they could recommend? Do those temporal thermometers work well or should I stick to an ear one? Any particular brands that work really well or any to avoid?

Re: Need thermometer recs

  • I'm not a fan of the temporal or ear thermometers.  Whenever I've tried the temporal I've gotten an odd reading and Sophia's ears are just too small for the ear thermometers to work well for me.  I have a Vicks brand thermometer that I use under her armpit and it always matches the pediatricians readings whenever she is sick.  This is the one we have: http://www.amazon.com/Vicks-SpeedRead-Digital-Thermometer-Rectal/dp/B002MMW6QU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1307635597&sr=8-2

  • We have a Bruan (ear) one that I really like.  K has been sick several times (104+ temps) and we've taken him to the ER which in turn they've hospitalized him twice for.  Each time we've always grabbed our ear thermometer out of the diaper bag to check the accuracy of ours and it's always been within .2 of theirs.  The ER checked rectally and the hospital checked with the one that goes under the arm and with both it was very very close.  The first time he was hospitalized was right at six months.
  • We just use the cheapy ones that go under the arm or rectally.  When adam talks to parents over the phone, he always asks for a rectal temp if under age 1 b/c it is the gold standard.  I think that really high quality ear and temporal ones (like you see in doctor's offices) work pretty well, but I'm not sure if the ones you can just buy function quite as accurately??  I guess I'd read some reviews online if you want one of those models, it will at least give you a good idea if you are in a "danger zone."

  • We have a Braun ear thermometer.  It looks nearly identical to the one that our pediatrician uses, and is always within a few degrees of it when W's been sick.  It wasn't cheap, but it's fast, and fairly painless (unless you're a sick toddler willing to put up a fight on anything).

This is the philosophy I've ended up with... We have an exergen temporal thermometer that works decently.  It's easy to use, and pretty accurate (I think) but I don't believe it too the tenth of a degree or anything.  We had TWO vick's speed read and both of them crapped out on us in little time.  I got fed up with them and moved on.  Thermometers just seem so hit or miss.

  • I hate the temporal thermometers.  A coworker's wife is a nurse at a local ER and she refuses to use the temporal thermometers on children because they are so inaccurate.  I would suggest a Braun ear thermometer instead, that's what they have always used on C at our doctor's office.  Of course, that's a doctor's office thermometer, the ones for home use probably aren't the same quality.  However, they should be able to get to within a degree or two of the actual temperature and let you know if you need to take action.
