How can people not tell they are pregnant?

This is just blowing my mind, my cousin just found out she is pregnant at 17 weeks.  She had no clue she was pregant, how did she find out you ask?  She had been running and biking every day and feeling great.  Even going to pilates but her tummy just wouldn't go away and she wasn't getting the results she wanted.  So next logical step was to take a pregancy test and sure enough the doctor confirmed it.

This past month since I have been putting on some pounds I was hoping an accidental pregnancy was the reason, but I knew I seriously wasn't pregnant.  I have never been pregnant but I feel like you would have some clue!  At least she figured it out so she won't be on the TLC show about giving birth in a toilet!

  • I don't think it's that hard until 20 weeks or so.  I only gained 6 lbs or so in the first 20 weeks and didn't really have any other symptoms.  Unfortuately I made up for it in weight gain in the 2nd 20 weeks.
  • the body does funny things sometimes!

some women continue to bleed monthly even though they are pregnant. some women have such irregular cycles that missing a period isn't something that they would notice.

like PP, some women have no pregnancy symptoms at all.

some women's belly's blow up like balloons as soon as sperm meets egg (me). other women don't look pregnant until they are well into their third trimester (a good friend of mine).

genes, body shape and the precise position of the uterus play a big part in "showing."

  • I'm one of those people who freaks out at every little ache, pain and itch. So there's no way I could get out of the first trimester without figuring it out.

But, for some people who wouldn't show very soon (or are not huge hypochondriacs like me), I can see how you could get that far.

  • I also don't really understand how it can happen.  Missing symptoms and such are understandable, but she's almost halfway to delivery. I feel like I know my own body well enough to know if that were actually going on.  Although, having never been pregnant I guess I can't say that with 100% certainty.  Always interesting to hear these things though.

  • Wow.

People who claim they "don't know" they're pregnant through their 3rd trimester are full of crap, in my opinion. When something is kicking you from the inside, you have to know something is going on, and it's either a baby or a major medical problem.

I can maybe see not knowing at 17 weeks if her cycles are extremely irregular.

  • I could see 17 weeks. I had zero pregnancy symptoms, and didn't feel kicking until well after week 22. So other than a belly that slowly got bigger, and being super regular and missing a few cycles, I wouldn't have known. Once the kicking starts though, especially in the later weeks, I have NO idea how people miss those... some were so bad they made me gasp!

Pretty much this. If you felt perfectly normal, I can see getting halfway through a pregnancy before figuring it out. I felt awful from the get-go! But once you can start feeling movement - it feels downright alien to have something moving around inside you. How you could overlook that is a mystery to me!

This is totally me. I wish I didn't know as early as I did, though! That's the hardest secret in the world to keep!

  • while i can see not "knowing" until after 1st tri, it's also kind of a scary thought, ya know?  that's a lot of prenatal care & testing that was missed!  FWIW, I didn't really have morning sickness (the thought of food would sometimes gross me out, but I also feel that way in the summer when it's so ungodly hot) and didn't feel kicking until 20+ weeks too.  If we weren't actively TTC, then my boobs being sore & having a hyper sense of smell wouldn't have been big enough to tip me off.

I hope the rest of your cousin's pregnancy is as easy-going as the beginning was!
