I called the non-emergency line...

WWY have done?

I pulled up beside a lady with two kids in the back. One was rear-facing in an infant car seat and was way too big. The poor girls head wasn't even resting on the car seat. Then I noticed she wasn't even buckled in! She was squirmy/crawling all over her car seat!

This really irritates me and scares the crap out of me so I called the non-emergency line. I'm guessing they get alot of these calls bc the guy got right down to business on where/car/etc.

Ugh...poor babies.

Re: I called the non-emergency line...

  • I've done this before too.  If I see someone driving with kids unbuckled I definitely call.  I've also called when I saw kids in a completely shut up vehicle in the Menards parking lot.  It was one of those super hot days last summer (thinking 100 or so) and there were two kids in a van with no open windows.  We sat and watched for 10 minutes and then I called.  We waited another 10 minutes until police arrived and no one had shown up at the vehicle by that time either.

  • I would have called to! Nothing chaps my hide more than seeing kids not secured safely in cars!!!!

I *think* I saw our neighbor throw their 3 year old in the backseat, no carseat, nothing! These are the same people we had to call the cops on last spring because their then two year old was outside, in just a diaper, in the rain!

I have done the same thing. A few times now I've reported toddlers running around in the back seat of a car. :(
  • I have the non-emergency # on speed dial! Plus my FIL is a DSM cop, so we'll call him first to make sure they'll actually do something, or if we're just being annoying. If he says to call we do! One summer we were at the Carlisle pool and a woman just let her 2 kids, probably 2 & 10mths wonder around they were PINK so you know she didn't out any sunscreen on them, and she let the youngest crawl wherever, the little thing was crawling straight for the pool, the mother didn't even care!

I feel you did the right thing!

  • 100% agree with what you did!  I can't even believe people sometimes and the risks they take with their children...
  • Good for you doing that!! I would have done the same thing in your situation!  It is so hard to see some of the things that some parents do :( It is hearbreaking that people put their children in danger that way.

  • I totally applaud you doing it.

It is kinda like that quote from Parenthood by Keanu Reeves '.... you need a license to hunt, hell, you even need a license to fish, but any brain-dead, a$$hole can be a parent.'

Did you hear about the guy who left his 10 month old at home to make a beer run?  I feel so bad for kids in those situations.

I work with Dependent Adults, and they always say, as long as you are being honest, report with your gut.  You can't get in trouble for that, and if you have even the slightest icky feeling, it is probably not right.

    Good for you.
