If it is because of hours I would just say that this schedule is not working out and I have found another job that better fits my needs. This is my 2 week notice.
"I just wanted to let you know I'm resigning, effective [date]"
No further explanation is really necessary.

FET - transferred two embryos (boy and girl) - Nov 2014 - BFP!
We have a pretty open dialogue (boss and I) so I guess I feel like I need to say something?? I worry too much about what people think about me, probably, and know that he won't be happy...so I guess I'm trying to diffuse the blow.
I sorta gave him a heads up that I was feeling conflicted when they added mandatory Saturdays from 9-6 with a 45 min commute (not my regular work location) at least 1-2x month. He was taken aback then, saying he thought I was so committed to the company, etc. Unfortunately, that was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back.
I'm going to work on being blunt and to the point! Thanks!

Both of these! seriously, do not build bridges, leave in good terms. They don't need to know anything and yes I totally understand that people will talk about it, I have been there with nosy coworkers. They're not going to change the company rules because it didn't work out for you. you're doing the best thing for yourself and getting out. Trust me I was in a very similar situation, if there was the worst boss award my boss would have been the one to get it and there was so much I wanted to tell her when I left but did not say a thing because she will have to vouch for me for as long as I'm planning to work and you don't want to leave a negative impression.
This. For me, what I would say to my supervisor compared to HR - now that's totally different!
This. People tend to think way to much about their resignation letters. The key is just not to be an *** so that you don't burn any bridges. Short and sweet is always the way to go.
