Towels or Paper towels? What do you use to clean?

When you clean the kitchen/bathroom and dust do you use paper towels or old towels?  I know paper towels are easy to toss out and you dont have to clean, but it can get expensive...but towels you have to clean after you use them and the idea of re-using the towel that cleaned the toilet just doesn't sound appealing.
What do you use?

Re: Towels or Paper towels? What do you use to clean?

  • I use cheapie white washcloths from the dollar store or the dollar section in target for cleaning. For dusting I use a barely damp microfiber cloth. For my Swiffer, I use cut up microfiber cloths that are cut to the same size as the disposable cloths they sell for it.

Everything goes in the wash together (bath towels and the t-shirts I use to dry my hair) and gets washed in cold water with EF detergent, a little clorox 2, a little borax, a little baking soda, and some white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser.

I don't get why the rag used in the toilet gets any less clean than the washcloth I use in the shower to wash my ass, you know? I reuse that after it's been washed so.. washed is washed in my opinion.

  • I also use the cheap washcloths from Target for cleaning.

I never thought twice about it. It goes through the laundry when I'm done with soap and water. I assume my machine does it's job so they come out clean. I make sure to do sinks and stuff first and hit the toilet last, but after the rag is washed, I don't care where it's been.

This.  I've been using cheap washcloths as well. Love the money that I save by not buying paper towels or Clorox Wipes.

  • I use cheap white wash cloths for cleaning. I have some that have a stripe like texture, these are specifically for the bathroosms.
  • I use rags for the most part. I may grab a paper towel to clean up a spill or something. We use less than a roll of paper towels a month. I use microfiber for dusting. The rags I use for the bathroom are yellow, the rest are white. I actually use newspaper for cleaning windows & other glass surfaces. It works great & I can still recycle it after. I was given this tip by a car detailer :-)
  • I think we have a general consensus that old rags do the trick haha. Towels it is!! I do agree that it'll save a lot of money and a lot of trees.  Thanks ladies!
  • Towels for sure.

And your kitchen sink has more harmful bacteria in it than your toilet. Food for thought :)

Amen. The bacteria in your poop lives in your bowels 24/7 and you're not dead, whereas who knows what kind of bacteria are growing in your pipes.

Anyway, we use rags.  I do use the Clorox Green Works wipes to wipe down my toilet, though. I only use the wipes in the bathroom, so a container of them last quite a while.

  • Both. I use paper on the toilets mainly because thats what i grew up doing and so i just always have. I like spraying, wiping, tossing. especialy for the everyother day and quick wipe downs because of company comming over.

I use washcloths on the sink, counters, tub, dusting, windows/mirrors and floors.

  • I have some rags/towels that I use to clean and dust with. I only use paper towels to clean glass and mirrors. I just wash the rags/towels in hot water.

  • I got some of those bulk rags/washcloths from Target.  Each color is a different level of grossness, so some are for general kitchen/bathroom (counters), then another color is for the grosser stuff, like grime and floor drips in the kitchen and toilet/floorboards in the bathroom.  I do hand wash and wring the gross rags in the sink as I am finished using them and leave them on the edge of the sink, hanging into the sink to drain for a while.  Usually they completely dry before they get tossed into the laundry.
