Foster program for pets of the temporarily homeless?

Does anyone know if there is a fostering program that can help a temporarily homeless family keep their pets until they can get into a home?  We know a family that has two dogs and a few cats that they love very much, but they can't live in a motel with all of them while they save money to get into a rental home.  I know it's a long shot, but I know some of the ladies here have experience with fostering.

  • I am fostering through BARCs and though I'm not sure they would take a pet temporarily, they may have some other resources on their website.

I don't know of anything off hand, but I would encourage them to talk to any local shelter and see what information they might have.

  • Thank you for the input.  I knew it was going to be difficult, and I still don't know how many cats they actually have.  I made some phone calls, but no one called back yet.  I'm hoping their friends might be able to step in and keep them for a while.  I would take them in myself if I could, but I can't have the dogs here with my rabbits because the dogs have a strong prey drive and it would terrify the bunnies, and I'm allergic to cats.  It's such a sad situation, but I hope they find a solution.

  • I haven't heard of any program like this, although there should be one! I think their best bet would be to really network, contact rescues and shelters to see if they know of anyone, or perhaps they have space to temporarily foster the animals (a rescue, not shelter). If they have Facebook I would post on there asking for help, have friends and family ask anyone they know, it seems to be the only way to get someone to take them.
  • I know there is something like this up in New Jersey - I was just reading about it the other day - but I can't for the life of me remember where I was reading it or where in NJ it was.  Not sure how practical that would be anyways for your friend!

  • Thank you for the reponses--they are mch appreciated.  This is a growing problem now with the economy.  I think maybe there will be more resources as this problem grows to keep pets with their families instead of in the shelters, etc.  So sad for that family and for their pets.
