Dogs just know...

Does your dog/cat/pet/etc just know when something is off kilter?

I caught a cold the other day and while Jackson is used to DH blowing his nose all.the.freakin'.time., he's not used to me.  All last night when I would blow my nose he would stop what he was doing and come over me and just stare.  He made sure I was okay before he went back to playing with his toy.  He did the same thing this morning - came running into the kitchen when I blew my nose.  It might have been the cutest thing ever.  He just wanted to make sure his mommy was okay.  And yes, we refer to ourselves as mom and dad even though we swore we wouldn't.

Do your pets know when something is wrong?  If you're crying, sick, happy...etc?

Re: Dogs just know...

  • Yes, my pets always know. If H and i are fighting, if i'm crying, sick, scared during a movie, etc., SoBoh always comes over and puts his head under my head or arm and Jackson is starting to come over and cuddle on my lap when I'm upset.  I tell H they always side with me in an argument and therefore I must always be right Stick out tongue

Harley does the same thing. She knows when one of us is upset and she will jump up wherever we are and just stare at us. She know if we are in a fight and will moan non-stop.  Oh and yes we call ourselves Mommy and Daddy too!

  • Jade definitely knows when something is different. She normally follows me around the house (since I mostly feed her, walk her, let her out, etc) but since I have been about 8 weeks along she is extra clingy. She will walk up to me while I am sitting on the couch and lay her head on my stomach and let out these big sighs. She also comes up to me while I am standing at the sink washing dishes and just smells me all over, paying special attention to my stomach. She never used to do that.

And we are Mommy and Daddy too!

  • A couple days before Colby was born Kane would (try) and lay his head on my lap and when he wasn't sitting on the couch next to me he was laying on the floor right by my feet.  He has NEVER done either of those things.  It was really weird.

  • My dog is similar to Jade...she's alway followed me around but she is extra clingy now and barks a lot more when DH isn't home. I definitely think she knows something is different. Although she (tries to) sit on my lap and the baby kicks her and she doesn't seem to notice, lol.

Every big dog I see on the street I just want to cuddle.  When we were on vacation last week I fawned over every dog we passed...I think H was excited for us to get home just so I would stop talking about how cute every single dog was.

I like to think my Brady is crazy smart (cause he is!) and he always knows when something is off.  The saddest thing is that H travels a lot so Brady knows what the suitcase means.  When H left last time Brady cried/whined for the longest time.  It was so sad.

quick story - I was in NYC for a bachelorette party a few weekends ago and when we were walking around (central park/upper west side), I think I stopped and pet every dog we passed.  The girls I was with (I grew up with the bride, so I'm not really friends with her friends), found it rather comical...none of them are real dog people.  I just couldn't help myself.

  • Mine definitely know when I'm upset or sick, but what's really hilarious is that our lab, Jack, knows when DH has had too much to drink! Normally he is really excited to see DH, but when he's had a few beers, Jack always tries to hide behind me. It's so funny!

  • Yes My Sheppard Kudo has been extra clingy since I got pregnant and the other day I had a moment of dizzyness. I took of my shoes and laid of the couch he followed behind me and sat his head on my chest and randomly licked my face. (He does not give kisses usually).

  • He's so adorable--such soulful eyes.  Yes I do think dogs do know when something is wrong.  When I feel down my dog sticks by me like glue and leans against me and demands that I pet him.  My rabbit can even sense it.  I was crying once and she came over and kept nudging me and looking up at me as if to say "What's wrong Mom?"  Animals are wonderful.

  • This is sad but beautiful in a way--our dog and our guinea pig were really good friends which is pretty unusual.  They always cuddled/ate together.  When our pig passed away, our dog layed by the cage for days looking very sad and even whined.  I really think he was mourning.   He loved that pig.  He doesn't care for the bunnies though.
