I saw a post on Linkedin the other day (someone who was posting that they knew of a great admin asst that was looking if anyone was interested) and it got me wondering whether I could essentially "pimp" myself out and say something like "If anyone knows of an attorney or law firm that needs some part time help through the summer, let me know as I would be interested." Or something like that.
Would that be acceptable or weird or inappropriate? I am an unemployed attorney (laid off for economic reasons) in a fairly narrow legal field, but am having no luck finding anything either outside of my field (preference) or in my field - through a few direct contacts. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Re: Linkedin/Job Search question
I'm interested to know the answer to this also. Maybe put it in your headline (shows up under your name)?
I recently changed my Linkedin headline to "Experienced research scientist looking for opportunities in industry" to see if that would help. So far I haven't seen any results so I don't know if it's helping or not.
As PP said, I'd suggest changing your headline to say something like "Experienced attorney looking for part-time legal work."
To answer your question, no, I don't think it would be inappropriate to post something like what you mentioned. A lot of people on my LinkedIn page do that & it seems to be effective. I don't see how seeking employment is any different than those who post to recruit employees. I'd suggest joining LOTS of groups that relate to your field/interests & put your posts in there as well. Good luck!
I'm pretty sure there's an option to check on your profile that states you are looking for opportunities.
And yes, I'd use the pp's wording with a title like "experienced attorney looking for part-time/freelance position" or something along those lines.

I'd hate to say it, but as a former law-school grad with lots of attorney friends, I see those postings all over my linked-in feed and I'm starting to get kind of annoyed by them (just because they're mostly broadcasting to people in the same position or not in a position to help) and I can't say they've done any of my friends any good.
Maybe try reaching out to some specific contacts to see if they could post something for you like what you saw on linked in, somehow, it seems better if it comes from someone other than the person looking for a job. Also you can change your headline to "looking for x" and there's something you can click on your profile to say you're open for opportunities. The best leads I've had so far have come from a legal recruiter who added me on linked in.
