Anyone have Mirena?

Does anyone out there have Mirena or another IUD?  What do you think of it?  How did the insertion go?  How did you feel afterwards?  How did you feel the next day?  How long were you spotting/irregular afterward?

I've talked to my doctor plenty about it and have decided to take the plunge and have an appointment for the insertion.  The doctor can only explain so much, so I'd like to hear about it from someone who has it currently.  Thanks!

Re: Anyone have Mirena?

  • Hi, I got my mirena inserted in April so I can tell you about my experience in the first month or so of having it, just not long term :)

Just as background, I am 22 with no kids and I was on the depo shot before I got my mirena. Before insertion my doctor had me use cytotec the night before and I also started taking 600mg Ibprofen every 6 hours the day before (which I continued to take for the first couple of days). The insertion process went very quickly, it was a little uncomfortable when they measured my uterus (like a cramping, bit worse than a PAP) and the insertion was a bit painful (like very heavy cramping)but it was over in less than a minute. I did eat before I went to my appointment, but I still got light headed and had to lay down for 30 minutes and drink orange juice before I could get up and get dressed. I had heavy bleeding and heavy cramping for the rest of the day, the bleeding stopped after the second day (cramps were not as bad on day 2) and I would get a weird cramp here or there for the next couple of weeks. Since then I have had my check up and everything is in place (my strings have pulled up though instead of curling up so they are a pokey now for FI).

I haven't had bleeding like other ladies have during their first few months of having the mirena, but since I am coming off the shot (on which I never had periods) this is expected. I have not had any bad side effects so far apart from a stray cramp here or there and the now pokey strings which are not fun for FI in certain positions (I may go back in and have them trimmed all the way up but that is not ideal and I'm trying to give them time to soften up and see if it improves). Overall the brief pain has been worth it (especially since my libido is up from what it was on the depo) and so far I have had no problem with my migraines so that is good (lol because I'm running out of options).

Hope all goes well for you, just remember to breathe and try to relax so it goes quickly

  • Yay!  Thanks!  Same story here - 23, no kids.  I did a round of depo to get me through my recent wedding, because I didn't want to have anything moving or cramping right before the big day.  That would be my luck.  I've had spotting, but knew that was a possibility.  And I'm expecting more spotting after this switch.  Dr. hasn't said anything about me doing anything at home to prepare the day before.  I will have to ask before my appointment.  Sounds like it won't be worse than any period I've had  - I can handle that!
    • Ok so I'm 22 now and I've had it since July of 2008, about 8 weeks after giving birth to my 1st (& so far only) child. To me it was exactly the same as a PAP, I had a little stomach cramping the day it was inserted & the next day but that is it. I never had spotting. I have had absolutely no periods with it besides a day of spotting every few months, which has been nice. I have had no problems with it other than at the very beginning my SO could feel the strings during intercourse, but that didn't last long, so I would suggest asking your Dr. to cut the strings short. As far as preparation goes.....I went in for an apt. discussed it with the Dr. was given a pregnancy test & then was scheduled to get it inserted a week later (no unprotected sex between apts.) that is to insure that you do not get pregnant before it is put in. I believe she had me take some ibuprofen a little before my apt., but that was all that was necessary. I totally suggest getting it.

    • I had it inserted after DD1 was born and loved it. No pain or anything...started spotting a few days after insertion and had mild spotting for a few weeks...

After that smooth sailing. I will go with the copper IUD after this baby as I did end up having some milk supply issues while breastfeeding.

    • Ive had my IUD now since December 2007 after our first was born.  The Insertion was a breeze, A slight pain/ pinch mild cramping very light bleeding a day or so after.  I still get my "Period" but its more like 5 days of just brown old blood which is pretty gross.  My husband and Dr.s have never been able to feel my strings, but They have seen it on Ultrasounds and x-rays, so we know its still there LOL

Up until Last week I LOVED my Mirena....

Last week I went to my OBGYN to have my IUD removed because my husband and I decided to try for baby #2.  I'm using my same doctor that put it in. Ive had it for almost 4 years. After probing for 20 minutes with 4 different forceps and hands, My Dr.  couldn't find my IUD.

The Other Dr. wasn't in. So They booked me for the 20th for another appt to be on the hunt again.  Next week if they cant find it they need to look for it  with a scope/ Camera so he can see it then grab it with the forceps.  The procedure is called a Hysteroscopy. If they cant find it that way, then its Surgery.

SO with all that being said, Im not 100% sure if I'll use Mirena again!

    • That's scary!  Good luck and hopefully they find it!  I did hear about that during the "we have to tell you every procedure does have risks" speech from the Dr.

I went and got it put in yesterday...holy cramps Batman!  It was pretty rough last night and I'm still crampy today - but feeling much better.  I got those kind of cramps that make you get goosebumps but you're sweating like crazy at the same time.  And Dr. said I was pretty pale and made me lay down for a little bit before I left.  That was probably the worse part!

Thanks for all the opinions ladies!

    • I am 22 and have no children. Insertion for me hurt pretty bad. It went by pretty fast though.. I cramped all day afterwards and the next day but then felt fine after that. On the 4th day it came out! My doc said this happens to less than 5% that have the procedure done. Good luck to you!
    • Just popped on this board from TheBump and couldn't resist giving my 2 cents :)

I got my Mirena in November of 2005. The insertion was quick, about 30 seconds of mild cramping, then it was done. I got a period in December, a very light one in January, and then nothing for 4 years until I took it out to TTC. Conception only took 9 months after removal. I was looking forward to getting it again after our daughter was born but we just found out our insurance doesn't cover it and it'd be over $1300... so we're looking into a vasectomy for hubby instead. I recommend the Mirena to anyone, although side effects vary for everyone. I had no weight gain/loss but I've heard it's happened. Good luck!
