I am currently on bc pills. I missed 6 days bc i forgot to order and it is giving me a scare. I am thinking about switching to a different form of bc. Does anyone get the shot, and do you like it? What kind of bc do you use? I am also looking for one that will lighten or take away periods
Re: ok ladies..quest on bc
I am on BCP - have been for 10 years. I've found there's a lot of variability between pills and how long/heavy my period is. With Ortho Tri Cyclen I had 7 day periods, every, single month. I switched to Lo Ovral and have 4 day periods. Tremendous improvement, and it's monophasic so you can skip placebos and eliminate periods all together if you're so inclined.
I think some of the ladies here are on some of the other methods (implant or shot?) and really have done well on those, too. A friend of mine is on an IUD and gets about 1 period a year.
Missing our little turkey.

my form of "bc" isnt going to help but....I just got pulled off BCPS due to side effects also and I chart. I just got my first period charting and its....maybe not different? i dont know i cant tell yet It just started this morning but there was no spotting day...just super super light spotting/color and now its here and ready to go...we'll see i used to do really badly off bcp....like i'd be curled up in the nurses office back then....we'll see!
Good luck....my periods were like 5 days on tri sprintec.....a friend did seasonique....the ring was about 5 days....i liked the ring....till I got used to it and became allergic to it....oi!
Getting fit for IVF!
I'm on Ortho Tricyclen Lo and have been for 7 years. For me exercise is a big part of how long AF is in town. It'll range anywhere frrom 2 to 5 days. This week she came and since I'm been running she was only around 2 days.
I have no complaints with Ortho Tri Lo
ETA: I should say though that we still use condems even though I've been on BC since I started having sex. We're not ready for a child yet so we take double precautions (and if it still somehow happens, well then it was just meant to be)

I'm on Nortrel, and my period is 2 days, max. Slight cramps, but nothing unbearable. However, I find myself on an emotional roller coaster throughout the month.
It's actually the second time I've taken it - I took it for a while, then switched to ortho tri cyclin, and I hated that. My periods were longer and heavier - typically 5 days, and really bad cramps. So I switched back, but I'm still not thrilled. I'm thinking of getting Mirena - I've heard really good things about it, aside from the initially bad cramping.
I was on Depo Provera (the shot) for a long time. The first time around I had spotting for about three months on and off and then no period for about 5-6 years. I had gone on Depo due to having alot of issues with BC pills. I took a break from Depo for about a year and went on different BC pills for a year (in fear that the Depo would make me infertile) and then took a break completely for a year. When I went back on Depo I had alot of spotting for several months. Before our wedding I went off of all BC and about 6 months later found out I was pregnant. We had decided that what happens happens post wedding.
The biggest complaint that I had about the depo was the spotting, but you could react differently. Many people complain about weight gain, but I actually lost using depo both times by paying attention to what I was eating.
I was on Depo for a total of 8 years, and it was the best BC I was on. Nothing else, when I started BC at 16, worked at all. I tried it all, pills, patches, nothing stopped the bleeding. So the shot was great, no periods for 6 years, went off for a year and a half, did seasonique which was awesome, went back on Depo for about a year and a half and then made a conscious decision to go off b/c of weight and bone density concerns. I gained for several reasons, but it's nearly impossible to lose on Depo once you put it on. Last pill was Ovcon, which was nice, but made me a big hormonal mess.
We went off everything in Jan (or somewhere around there) and now I chart, watch CM, and either use condoms or abstain during potentially fertile times. We're both in the mindset of, if it happens, it happens, but we're not actively TTC and so far charting as worked well and I feel SOOO much better.
I loved the shot, but be warned that the side effects are pretty hefty. Bone density loss and the potential for breast cancer after prolonged use is major. And bone density screenings suck.
I am currently on Seasonique Lo. I am to get my period every 3 months. Since I'm only on my second round of it, my body is getting used to this pill so I'm getting inbetween spotting. But I really like this pill because I don't get migraines or headaches with this one.
I was on Loestrin and it just didn't work for me.
I know of a few people that are on the Depo shot and love it, but the only downfall is when you're trying to conceive and you go off the shot, your cycle takes a bit to get back into the swing of things.
All in all, you need to figure out what works best for you!
I found when I was on BC pills that my body was really sensitive to the different cocktails of hormones. I had to get it just right. It took quite a few years and different brands before I settled on Marvalon. I don't know if it's around anymore. That worked for about 5 years and then I started spotting out of nowhere.
So I decided to try depo because--like most women--I loved the idea of no more periods. Quite the opposite happened to me. I had one depo shot and it was a nightmare. I got the shot back in 2003 and ended up having to take time off of school. I suffered from exhaustion and hypermenorrhea (constant bleeding). My normal 5 day-long periods turned into 28+ days, and I bled for nearly four months. Bleeding that much for so long takes a real toll on your body, and I would sleep 18+ hours some days. I felt depressed too, and have never suffered from any sort of depression in my life.
I never got a second shot, and I still think it was a stupid idea to get the shot in the first place. Given my problems with BC pills and how sensitive my body is to these cocktails, why in my right mind did I think getting a three-month liquid dose of them in my butt would be a grand idea? I didn't really research all the possible negative side effects. I was blinded by the idea of never having to remember to take a pill. I think the bone-density loss is a serious problem, and a very good reason to steer clear of this form of birth control. For a few years after I stopped taking it, I experienced 8 or 9 day-long periods. Now I'm back down to 5 (normal). I still feel like an idiot for taking a birth control that's only been on the market for two decades. Never agree to be anyone's guineapig. I wish I'd researched more before getting stabbed in the bum. http://www.cwpe.org/node/185
Whichever method you choose, I would do your research, and read all the side effects carefully. Make an informed decision.
I just heard there is a class-action lawsuit brought against the makers of Yaz (Yasmin), because of inadequate warnings about the increased risk of stroke from this brand compared to others. http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/EdmontonHome/20100310/birth_control_100310/
three year ago I decided to stop manipulating my body with artificial hormones altogether. That was the best decision for me.
My aunt had the same thing happen to her and she gained a lot of weight.
I was on BCP for a long time and tried a few different types over the years. I have to say my favorite was the Loestrin 24, I love that stuff! They didn't make a generic at the time so when I lost my insurance I had to switch to something else.
I have been off BCP for almost 2 years now and I would never go back, it is so much easier to just pay attention to your body and chart, I hated how I felt on BCPs.
