Who is good with hair?

I'm going to a formal event tonight and have to do my own hair and makeup after work.  I think I can handle the makeup, but I suck at hair.  I was thinking of trying to curl it and leaving it down or doing half up, but whenever I curl my hair, it falls out within a matter of an hour or so.  Is there some product that I can buy to put on my hair before I curl it that will help it hold?  Besides shellac-ing it with hairspray after curling?  My hair is pretty long, about down to my bra strap in the back.  Any tips or other suggestions?

This is my dress:

Re: Who is good with hair?

  • I'm no help with the hair, but I LOVE your dress. Have fun!

If it were me I'd shellac the sh!t out of my hair with hair spray so it was curly and then do a low messy/curly bun or side ponytail.

  • Your dress is so! cute!  Do you use conditioner? sometimes that makes it harder for curls to hold.  Also before you curl a piece of hair if you hit it with a spritz of hairspray then curl it it will hold better.  making sure you dont touch your hair too much after its done that makes it get frizzy and fall. hope this helps

  • Love your dress!!

If I curl my hair and really want it to stay, I spray it right before curling, shake it out, then spray again.  Plus I tend to put it at least half up, I feel like it stays neater looking that way.

  • I have the same problem with my curls.  Try spraying your hair before you start curling and after...maybe that will work.  One more thing, your dress is gorgeous!  Have a great time tonight

  • I have zero suggestions, but pp's sound good.  But I love the dress, what sort of event is it? I want to go to a fancy event :)

  • I agree w/pp -- spray the strands of hair before you curl & then after you are all done curling (everything) spray it all.

I use MOP products which are amazing, but i think you can only get them from salon supply stores (my bff gets it for me).

for every day use, I actually use tresema (sp??) ultra hold. i bought it when i was on vacation since i couldn't travel with it on my carry on & was suprisingly impressed for as cheap as it is.

    super cute dress!!

  • Caruso steam rollers are the trick.  Not sure why but they hold my hair like nothing else.

Aw, thanks for the compliments everyone!  I hope it looks as good on me as it does on the mannequin, lol.  The event is a charity reception meet-and-greet for a celebrity softball game that is happening on Saturday.  The invitation says "black tie preferred", although DH is just wearing a nice suit.

I will definitely make sure I spray before curling, hopefully that helps!  I'm actually really glad it's not as hot and humid today too.

Maybe I need to invest in some rollers!  Do they have Caruso at places like Target?  I'm going to be limited to shopping on my lunch break.

  • on more big suggestion -- if you haven't already, do not wash your hair today.  Curls & product hold better to hair that isn't freshly washed (no shampoo or conditioner)

for my wedding, my MOH had me not wash my hairs for 2 days and my curls held all day (my hair was almost to my butt).

  • I love that dress! I am not good with hair but like you, I like wearing my hair down and curled but can never get the curls to stay. After seeing that the dress is one-shoulder, I think a low side semi-messy bun would look great. You can still curl the bottom half of your hair but then create the bun with bobby pins (probably a rubberband to start with)... I don't know how much time you have or if you'd want to try something new right before the event (if you've never done this before)... but I've done it before and it is pretty simple.

  • If you already have washed your hair today, try a salt water/surf type spray.  Bumble & bumble makes one that I love: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P280513&categoryId=C24070

  • Love the dress!

Hot rollers are the only thing that work for me to curl my own hair.  I curl my friends hair for her and use a hot curling iron and spray each strand before and while curling it and that seems to work.

Too late.  :o(  Crap, I guess I should have posted about this yesterday!  I think my lunch break will be spent scouring the beauty aisles of Target for a miracle in a bottle, haha.

    Yes

Beautiful dress Mara, I think a side messy bun/pony with curls and a little volume would look great. If you do the bun, I think you can go either side, if you do the side pony I would do it to the right (opposite of strap).

     ETA: clarify

  • Can't help w/hair, but I love the dress!
