How much do you pay for childcare?

Hello!

I'm jumping over from TK to see how much you'd pay an hour for a nanny? I'm looking for jobs for the fall, am considering nannying and am wondering what is a reasonable amount to ask for per hour? I'm in the Central Mass area, if that helps!

Re: How much do you pay for childcare?

  • There is a resident nanny here who can help. I'm pretty sure Boston rates are between $18 and $25/hour.

I'm in SC and pay $300/week for a part time nanny.

Money will depend on your experience, your education level, and the competition. I received 28 resumes, interviewed 5, and chose one. My nanny has a bachelor's in social work and early childhood development, is applying for graduate schools now, and has quite a good amount of experience.

My preference was someone who spoke 2 languages but that nanny just didn't connect with us as well as ours did. Though her credentials were quite impressive since she was older. We went with the one we connected with more.

    GL!!

Resident nanny here!  Punky is right with the going rate...you can expect to be paid between $18 and $25 an hour for typical children.

I actually work in a town that  is super competitive when it comes to nannies, and the pay is much higher.  In particular if you have special needs experience you can expect to basically name your rate.  I have a nanny friend in the town that commutes an hour each way for great pay.  She also was able to negotiate health insurance, retirement, and several other perks.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Our nanny does not have any of these (which is the norm here, apparently)...but she does get PTO (which is not the norm).

We'll also work around her grad school schedule when the time comes.

Punky--I don't have these either.  When I negotiated my deal I REALLY thought at the time I would only be working as a nanny for a year, and I didn't put a lot of thought about long term.  Looking back I wish I had negotiated for some of these things.  I get PTO...two weeks vacation, and unlimited sick days.

The only "perk" they had for me upon contract was that they gave me a cell phone.  I already had a cell, and it was a pain to carry around two.  Eventually I just asked if they could use mine.  So now they contribute to my cell phone bill.

I don't have fuel reimbursement either.  Most nannies I know track their miles, and get a reimbursement check.  I really have a great family, and I don't mind that they didn't offer this.  Most of the time if they realize I have been doing a ton of driving with the kids they will come home with a Starbucks gift card for me!
