My new hobby! Photogs please chime in :-)

Soooo...after many years of thinking about taking the plunge and doing more with photography as a hobby, I have decided to jump in and do it - and I am quite giddy about it!!

I have always loved taking photos and videos and played at some "light" editing, but nothing serious. I love sharing my art (however limited!) with my friends and family, but recently decided to take the next step - to invest in a good beginner's DLSR, and take a few classes. I think primarily I want to shoot nature, which has always been a favorite subject of mine, and I can only imagine the results once I really figure out what the heck I'm doing :-)

My Hubby is very supportive, as he says I  drive him crazy trying to get the perfect shot with my point-and-shoots, and then being slightly disappointed when they don't all come out as I envision them. Seems to take super photos you need things...like a good camera and lenses...go figure...lol

Anyways...wish me luck, girls! I'm researching cameras, and learning a lot in the process. I think I'm leaning towards a Canon EOS T3i as my starter, but the EOS 20d may also be a good option. For my photog nesties (pro and hobbyists)...opinions are most definitely welcomed!!

  • Good luck!

DH has a Pentax (not sure what model) his original FILM camera was a Pentax and he has tons of lenses and the nice people there made the old lenses compatible w/ their new digital cameras so thats what he went with. I however have a cannon point and shoot and I love it.

I have heard there is a weight difference between canon and nikon so you may want to go and pick them both up and see how you feel about them weight wise.

  • Thanks, Laur - This is exactly the kind of feedback that I'm looking for! I definitely plan to get into to a store and hold them both :-)

  • I'm a Canon gangsta, through and through. :) I rock a 7D and have a 40D as my backup camera. With that being said, the T3i or 20D are great starting points - you can buy them with the kit lens' but I'll admit to you that the kit lens is nothing but a wad of plastic crap you'll be carrying around in your pocket. You'll be capturing better images than you did with your previous point and shoot, but it's not going to be the ideal lens you'll want to use over time.

What kind of nature images are you thinking of taking? Landscape/large scenery or small detailed shots of flowers and bugs? Landscape/large scenery: consider investing in the 20mm 2.8. Small detailed shots of flowers/bugs: consider investing in the 100mm 2.8 macro. If you're wanting an in between lens that does a little bit of both and offers great quality, you could get the 24-70mm 2.8.

There's my $.02. Keep me posted on what you decide on! AND I WANNA SEE PICTURES!! :)

    love, jenifriend

Thank you, Jeni!!! I was hoping to hear from you :-)) Your work is amazing!

I think a little bit of both...but mostly bugs, flowers, landscaping, trees and yes, some mountains and ocean photos. Perhaps down the road I'd like to advance to doing some more varied stuff. I also am looking forward to shooting animals and my baby nieces - I think they are going to become my test subjects :-)

Thanks soooo much for the lens advice - this is key. I was debating just getting the body, but I didn't know what kind of lens to get if I opted to go that way. Now I do! Is there a specific name for the lens that I should be looking for?

  • I'm a Canon girl as well. Right now I only have a Rebel XT which is DH's old camera (He has the 5D) I'm looking into the Rebel T2i as an upgrade when i can afford it.

And I would DEFINITELY suggest a macro lens especially for close up shots. I want a macro lens SO FREAKING BADLY

  • Laurie, Jeni and Amanda: I did it!

I just ordered the Canon EOS T3i from Amazon, which had the best price I could find on it new. I should have it on Monday...woo hoo!!

From the looks of the price of the EF 24-70mm lens, methinks I'll be waiting just a little bit longer before I spring for that one...lol...but hopefully the lens that comes with the camera will be sufficient for me to practice on and get familiar with the whole digital photography process! I know I'll have a million more questions once I actually get it, but man am I excited! Thanks so much for your feedback ladies Smile

I take a TON of pics everyday!  Lately I have been taking most with my phone so I can play with them on instagram and I always send Andy a few when he is at work, but I want to get back to taking the majority with my camera! This camera goes with me everywhere!
