Pool question- Algae Attack!

This is a repost from Buying a Home board...

Opened the in-ground pool this weekend, and it's very green- full of algae. We shocked, added algaecide, vacuumed, scrubbed, got the water tested. The PH was high, so we added PH-down and shocked again. I'm wondering how long it typically takes for the algae to clear? The cover was a porous safty covers.  I know the answer depends on specific levels, but I'm just looking for a general range so we know when to start worrying!

 TIA!

Re: Pool question- Algae Attack!

  • We also have an inground that was very green upon taking the cover off, and after DH put in the 'strong' algaecide (the one for opening up your pool), it cleared up in about 1 day. I believe 4 gallons of chlorine went in when the algaecide did. If it takes much longer than that I'd be taking another sample back to the pool store!

  • We opened our pool on Memorial Day, and this is what it looked like:

It was so nasty and smelled awful - lots of leaves got composted through the mesh cover.  DH and I spent every free moment last week scrubbing, skimming, vaccumming, etc.   We have a DE filter, so we backwashed it a few times a day to make sure we were getting all the gunk.  By Saturday, it looked like this:

It will take a little time, but it will get there.  Good luck - pools are so frustrating sometimes!  I was ready to fill ours in with dirt on Thursday :)

  • Wow! So that only took a week to clear? That's good to hear. We did get the water tested and got ph-down to fix the ph levels, and i heard that should make the algaecide and shock work better.

     Thanks for the answers!

  • Ours was clear as a bell when I took off the pool cover.  And it is still clearclearclear.

We go to Home Depot and buy a huge roll of 6mil black contruction plastic.  We cut it the length we need, and have a enough left for another time or two.  Then we lower the water below the water lines, blow out the lines with a wet vac, secure the black plastic in place with 8x16x2 cinder blocks.  In the spring, the cover has pond scum, which the yard loves, but the water was clear.  ahhh.  so nice.

You have put a lot of chemicals in your pool.  Just give it all time to work.  Backwash your filter often, keep your skimmer and pump pot emptied, and take water in every few days, just to check.

Yes, only a week...but it was a week where we literally spent HOURS scrubbing, skimming, using the vac, etc.  There was a lot of debris on the bottom, so once we got that out, the pool went from brown to green.  Then it took a crap-load of chemicals to shock it.  And we backwashed the filter several times a day.  It was blue but cloudy by Friday, so clarifier did the trick.  By Saturday it was crystal clear.  If I wasn't off from work that week, it probably wouldn't have been ready as soon as it was.

  • Ditto tracyd21.  Memorial Day = swamp water; Saturday = crystal clear.  Lots of work in between, but it paid off.  GL!
