HELP! Front Load Washer STENCH!

I have a front load washer and it smells so BAD! Rotten eggs, bad. It has it's good and bad days, but when it's bad.. it's REALLY bad. I have tried everything it seems like.. vinegar, clorox, changing the filter, products made to help clean the drum, etc. NOTHING seems to help!

Does anyone have any secrets to this matter?! TIA!

Re: HELP! Front Load Washer STENCH!

  • Unfortunately this is one of the BIG drawbacks of frontloaders. Do you leave the door open when not in use? That is suppose to help some.

We've had an ongoing stink problem as well, but this works wonders!

  • There is a cleaner that you be used quarterly. leave door open when not in use, and clean the front rubber and drain. image
  • keep the door open, wipe the grey lining each time and TIDE makes a front load washing machine cleaner.

This.  I make sure to wipe the lining out each time to try to prevent the funk.  When I do the weekly deep cleaning in the bathroom I run some vinegar through the washer and wipe it out until it is totally dry.

My SILs front loader has mold built up under the liner and an awful stench.  Better to do the daily wipe down than to get mold in an $800 machine!

  • This is one of the reasons I decided not to get a front loader. One of my good friends has one in a laundry closet (so leaving the door open would mean blocking his hallway). He said he just wipes the liner each time to help prevent it.
  • Thank you EVERYONE! I do leave the door open when I'm not using it. We cleaned the drain and it seemed to help, but didn't eliminate the odor. I love my machine.. it just stinks. Haha. I will definitely start the routine cleaning. Hopefully that will put a stop to all of this stinkiness.

I wish I had known this before I got a front loader. What sense does it make to have to wash a washer? Mine has a black stain around the grey liner. Ugh. Does bleach get it off?

  • OK - I was logging in to post something similar...what is the name of the cleaner and where to find it?  I have tried vinegar/bleach...our clothes seem to have a musty smell to them and am guessing it's time to 'clean' the washing machine.

  • I'm so glad I found this post! We JUST got a front load washer and dryer (I am vertically challenged and have a back problem so the standing-on-tip-toes-to-reach-in-washer-then-bend-down-to-the-dryer just doesn't work for me). I will start leaving the door open and as a clean freak, I would recommend cleaning it (scrub well with elbow grease) every 3 months or so. I put stuff in the drains every 3 months or so to keep them from getting clogged and smelly. Same principle?

  • We have had problems with tiny baby socks getting sucked into the water outlet system.  You can pay 90.00 an hour for someone to come out and take the machine apart, or you can google the instructions.
My thoughts (especially if you are leaving the door open), since we all sometimes forget to clear out our pockets or have tiny socks, is it possible that something is stuck somewhere, mildewing?
