Factoid Friday

Tell us your strange/odd/different facts about you...

Re: Factoid Friday

  • I have a large red birthmark on my big toe around my nail and never even thought twice about it as a kid (love my parents).

I am the only teacher/student/staff/parent in my school that is not black.

  • I am the youngest person on my team of teachers and it takes it's toll on me sometimes.

I'm in the same boat! that + the race issue many parents bring up (it's so frustrating - I just want to help your kid read!) is a huge stressor.

  • I am the youngest person in my department by 25 years. When interviewed I was told they didnt want to hire me due to my age (23 at the time). They hired someone else and after a month fired her and begged me to come. I did b/c I get free tuition out of it.

Yeah, being the youngest, the older teachers think they can run the show all the time.  Plus I just can't relate to them sometimes and vice versa.  As for the race issue, I do get that sometimes.  I mean I do work at a predominately white school but I do get the occasional parent that thinks their kid is failing my class because I'm racist.  I just want to tell them one of my best friends from college is black and we roomed together.

  • I have a patch of hair near my bangs that never grows longer than about an inch.  Eva has the same thing- in fact, I have never cut bangs on her, they are just there naturally.  It's so bizarre!

The race issue for me is a different. It's not that they think I'm racist, but there's this irrational fear in some members of the black community (esp in inner city DC) that people are trying to change their child to "white". Since I'm white, I'm an easy target. (My students use it also. They fear that doing well in school, staying on the straight and narrow, etc. will make their friends think they're "doing too much" and "white". So sad that there are these stereotypes and fears, IMO).

Yeah I certainly don't get that.  I just get I'm racist as the reason their child is failing my class.  Yet the other 20 or so kids that are the same race as their child is passing.  Ok that makes a lot of sense.
