Dusting

I am constantly dusting as I go. I like to keep things picked up as I go and just clean a little here and there as I see it needs to be done. That way I'm never bogged down spending an entire day cleaning instead of having family time.

But it seems like I'm constantly dusting and wiping up dog hair. We have a wiry haired little terrier mutt, and she sheds constantly. We keep her shaved most of the time, but as it gets close to time for another shave, I just find hair everywhere! I love animals, worked at an animal shelter and vet for years, but I have always hated hair. It just makes me feel like I'm not doing a good enough job keeping this place clean. I think I'm the only one who sees it, though, because I have asked friends and family if they notice it, and they all think I'm crazy for obsessing over something they don't even notice.

Anyway, to make a long story short, does anyone have an tips to keeping the hair under control? Even the Swiffer doesn't do it. I have found that dryer sheets actually seem to work better than a cloth when dusting furniture or window sills or counters. But then I always go over it with a good smelling wipe down. We have hard floors everywhere except the bedrooms, so the vacuum doesn't do it either. The couch and chairs all stay clean because I wipe them down at least once a day if not more often, and the area rug in the living room is hair free from daily vacuuming. But I still feel this is not enough. I can almost see the hair floating and settling somewhere else as I dust off one area.

Re: Dusting

  • Take your dog outside every single day and give the coat a good brushing.

  • I had this EXACT same problem at my old house. It has hard wood floors in every room and it seemed like the broom, swiffer, OR vacuum weren't getting it. The thing we found that worked was I got a kick @$$ canister vacuum that I could use on the hardwood floors to get the bigger stuff up. I'd say this thing (as long as i didn't need to change the bag) got about 99% of the dog fur of a ridiculously shedding lab and pointer mix (aka LOTS of dog fur) and then swiffer would get the rest of it. But we had to do it EVERY day.

  • It's a more expensive option, but for the floors I'd be considering asking for a roomba as an xmas present.  At least that way you'd only have to empty the cache once daily, instead of taking the effort to vacuum once daily.  I'd also ban the dog from the carpeted areas (since it sounds like that's only a portion of your place).

  • We have a beagle so she has short stiff hair too.  Brushing doesn't really do much, but I have found lint rolling her to work very well!  I try to roll her a few times a week and she's a real sport about it.  It may not be the best solution, but I figure every piece of hair stuck to the roller (I use about 3 tapes a session) is less that's floating around our house.
