Babysitter Rates

What is the going rate for a sitter?

I was thinking about this too and wasn't sure.  It probably depends on the age and experience of the sitter of course. I have a young teen living next door who is very nice that I figured I could use in the future (up until now we've just used family), but I have no idea what would be fair for her...$5? $8? $10??  I used to make $8 in college but that was ten years ago.

  • Yeah, I guess it depends on experience/age. I'm going to use one of Abe's teachers at school. She lives just down the road, is in her early twenties, and getting married in the fall...so I know she can use the extra money! :)
  • She is likely getting $10-12/hr at work

Above data from the state's childcare market rate executive summary in 2008. It would seem that the do in every 2 years, but I don't have 2010. I don't even remember where I got 2008!

In MA, a teen would probably get $12-15... but a college graduate or experienced caregiver would get $18-25. My sister used to get $25/hr as a grad student in Boston. It's probably ridiculously inflated though.
  • We have a college student who works as a live-in nanny for friends of ours down the street that sat for James our one night out that we paid for a babysitter.  She charged $10/ hr, which is what she also charges our friends for their 2 young kids.  I think it's around the base rate for now- more kids I'm sure = more money.

  • Maybe I should do some underground babysitting until I get a nursing job! I'm older, college-educated, and I have a nursing degree! That has to count for something, right?  LOL

When I babysit for my sister, she tries to pay me (since she's in SoPo and I'm in L/A and the price of gas being what it is) and she always says she would have to pay a sitter anyhow-- and she usually gives me $20 or $25 for her 2 kids for 4 hours. Dunno if that helps?

  • We paid $18 an hour back in Feb. for our friend's ex-nanny to babysit Owen and we also fed her, but then in April Owen's daycare teacher watched both kids for the evening and had to put Owen to bed, and she only wanted $14 an hour, and no food.  (We gave her $20 an hour just because I was expecting to have to pay $22 and she was great and really helped us out at the last minute.)  My sister pays $20 for a sittercity.com babysitter for her two kids, and leaves $20 for pizza.

Long story short, sitters charge all over the place.  I'd say $12 - 15 was fair.

  • at Abe's school she is probably only paid between 10-13 an hour.  It's horrible what we pay childcare staff.

I think between 10-15 would be awesome in our area- plus it's tax free for her and you get the piece of mind of someone who knows your baby really well :)

  • I would ditto what Kristy said.  You could also try and trade hours with a nearby friend with another kiddo.  Works well..speaking of which I need to redeem an IOU soon :-)

Yes, free friend services works VERY well. I highly recommend it. And if you find a good trading partner, be sure to make sure they cash in on their IOU so they can enjoy stress and budget free sitting services!!! Wink
