Belle - can I pick your brain?

You're an event planner, yes? Mostly weddings?

I'm trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up, so I'm trying to focus on what I like and am good at. I LOVE events, but more the event operations (set up, tear down, transportation of needed supplies, etc.) - not, like, what color napkins are being used. Can you think of any event-related jobs that I might not be thinking of?

I'd love to do venue sales (I kind of do that now - but with concerts, meetings, and those kind of events) but I don't have catering or hospitality experience.

I could work for an equipment rental place, I guess, but don't really know where to start...

Am I missing something glaring?

    No, you're not missing anything...

Actually, the best place to start is probably contact your local wedding planners. I take an active role in the design aspect {the stuff you're not interested in}, but I have co-planners and assistants who help with exactly what you are describing - the set up, tear down, transportation of items, etc.

An event manager deals with a lot of the event/venues operations... not really a sales person because they are more concerned with the revenue of the event instead of the actual set up and such... you wouldn't be the coordinator/designer so you wouldn't really pick colors and all that stuff, but an event manager would be responsible for the set up and the stuff you're interested in.

A rental company also deals with a lot of the set up/take down stuff... and all kinds of stuff, draping, tables, linens, lounge stuff, etc.

So yeah, you could start working for a wedding planner or become an assistant at a venue and see if you like it.

You can always email me specific questions if you have any... don't know if I'll be a huge help but I'll try :)

Thanks so much! I actually don't want to do weddings - I'd love to do large-scale events (concerts, festivals, Taste of Chicago, racing events, etc).

You're completely right - I need to volunteer. A good friend/former coworker of mine started her own (two person) event company a year or so ago. I might talk to her about becoming a volunteer for her company - maybe with the Events Manager title - just to get it on my resume. I don't really have a lot of time outside of work to volunteer. Since she worked with me, she would totally understand that; a large events company probably wouldn't be as understanding.

I feel like I'm having a mid-career crisis, hahaha! Do I want to do something I enjoy that will take up most of my time, or would I rather pursue typical 9 to 5 opportunities that allow me more time for my life and hobbies? UGH

  • Yeah, non-weddings would be perfect for you because they are such large scale events, usually with insane budgets too!!!

I know EXACTLY how you feel! I have to say, starting my own business is one of the best things EVER! I would def. contact your friend and test it out! Either way, it would look great on your resume! I've helped out a few friends who have come to work some events for me and I find they either LOVE IT or HATE IT.

Although the business is a TON of work, it's actually really rewarding. You get to pull off amazing events that YOU did, and see happy clients. It's SO worth it!

I thought it would take up more of my time too, but I've been able to develop a great work/life schedule, which is one of the things I hated about my previous job, it was hard to develop a difference because they were so demanding. There are times in the day where I take the day off just because I can, sometimes I work most of the day, but as soon as hubby gets home, email gets shut off, I won't take any work calls, etc. A lot of the events also happen over the weekends {as far as weddings go}, I'm not at the stage where I'll hand it off for someone else to oversee so I'm still there. It's my company so I feel like I NEED to be there, but since it's my company I also can bring H along to help out. He lifts the heavy boxes and we get to spend the day together lol.

  • :butting in: I believe Red Frog events is hiring (the ones that do Warrior Dashes) and they look phenomenal to work for - if I'm thinking right, they're in Chicago
  • actually I just looked and they're accepting resumes for Summer graphic design positions and Fall Events Coordinators

Holy crap, they look amazing to work for! I don't see where they have jobs listed on their site - but I'm going to try and come up with an awesome cover letter and resume anyway. Thanks so much for finding this - I'd never heard of them before!

  • I think you have to start with an internship, but since they only hire/promote from within, once you're in, you're in! It just says to send cover letter and resume to jobs@redfrogevents.com

I actually looked at them for my H awhile ago when I stumbled across them from the Warrior Dash. They seem like such a great company and have amazing benefits. Good Luck!!

I saw that you have to start with an internship, which is a little scary...but we'll see!

Their benefits are ridiculously amazing - like, I can't believe they exist, amazing.
