What is the tipping etiquette for carry-out food?
What's the tipping etiquette if you get carry out food from a restaurant? I notice they always have the tip line on the check when you pay by credit card. However, if you are the one driving to the restaurant, getting out of the car, and going inside to get the food, is it expected that you tip?
Also, what do you typically tip for curbside service? I occasionally use this service at PFChangs where someone comes out to your car, takes your money, and brings you the food. What do you usually tip for this service?
My answer is that I haven't been tipping for carryout and for curbside, I've been doing $2-$3.
Re: What is the tipping etiquette for carry-out food?
I do 10% when they bring out to the car. It is usually a server and I don;t know that they also have tables inside and while they aren't refilling ym drink etc, they did take my phone or online order and get it all together for me.
Carryout for us is either Chinese or pizza and in these cases I do not tip, since it is as if I were picking up at Chipotle or some other place like that where you go up to the register to pay and get your food.
10%, which almost always works out to $2 to $3 for me.
And the reason is, is because someone had to spend time packing up your food. Someone who would otherwise be doing something else.
The people who pack up your food are usually servers making less than minimum wage (usually $2.75/hour). I used to be a waitress so I tip 15% on carry out and 20% on curbside.
