Update to buying a house near commuter rail

The house was gorgeous. The train was LOUD and way too close. So we are back to the drawing board and resigning our lease. But they said if we need to get out early we can if we pay$250 then post the apt on craigslist and find someone to rent it. Ugh. I don't know why we thought we could find a house in under a month. Thanks for the opinions!

  • What a bummer, but I'm glad you were there when the train went by so at least now you know.  House hunting is really not fun.
  • We looked at a house once with the train tracks basically in the back yard. I asked my realtor how loud the train would be, and she said "As loud as a train gets!" Haha

I hope you find something soon!

  • Well, at least now you know.  Sorry it didn't work out.

Do leases not go month to month in Boston after the first year is up?  I've never rented here but that's how it worked in the S.F. Bay Area.  I think it's kind of crappy that you still have to pay $250 to get out of your lease early if you also find someone to take over the place.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I'm sure there are plenty that are. Our management company said they don't do it. It is probably too much work for them.

  • I've never lived somewhere that let you go month to month after your lease is up.

We had to pay something ridiculous like 2 months rent to get out of our lease when we bought our house, and we weren't allowed to sublet.

  • Well, boo. I'm sorry it didn't work out, but at least you found out before you made an offer.  I hope you can find something soon, and that it won't be too costly for you!

Most of my apartments around here have been tenant-at-will, where I just had to give 30 days notice.  We're locked into a September lease cycle now, though, which I hate. We're actually subletting through August, and then will sign a new lease. And because our landlord is a nutcase,we have to mail our rent checks to Swampscott, and the people we're subleasing from then mail a check to Belmont. Instead of us just slipping the check under the door, since he lives on the second floor.  He's a weirdo.
