I've been working in the creative dept. of an ad agency for about a year now, and I absolutely love it. There are several perks for me: a casual environment (I can wear whatever I want, decorate my cubicle however I want, and there's no pressure to be "formal" like there sometimes is in a more corporate setting). The hours are flexible, I get along fantastically with my coworkers, and I get to work on a variety of accounts...and my commute is just 10 minutes!
Recently, I've been contacted on linkedin SEVERAL times about an opportunity at a retail corporation in my city. It's for a place I shop at quite frequently, and the product sounds like it would be fun to work on. They're willing to pay me 30% more than I am currently making now. My husband just had to take a pay CUT, so this is kind of tempting. However, I'm so happy at my current employer, I don't know if I'm willing to risk moving to a company that I'm unsure about. Plus, I'm afraid that if I make the switch to the corporate side, I'll never get back over to the agency side.
Can anyone give me some advice? I could use some extra opinions. I'm pretty torn on this right now.
Re: Should I stay or should I go?
You said you've been contacted on LinkedIn but have you actually interviewed in person? I think you absolutely should meet them in person (what have you got to lose?) and ask a lot of questions. That alone might be enough to help you make your decision. Maybe you'll get there and realize the people are strange or the environment is too rigid or any number of things. Or maybe you'll get a really good vibe and feel confident about taking the risk.
