I'm 27 years old. Today, the bagger at the grocery store called me mam. then when I got home & was unloading the groceries, a man doing fundraising for a place for mentally & cognitively impaired adults comes the the door & asks if my parents are home. Make up yours mind! *end rant* lol

I hate that, too. I used to get called ma'am all the time when we lived in GA. It drove me nuts, but I learned to roll with it. But then I get carded at the bars and when I buy alcohol. I know I look younger than what I am, but.....really people, make up your minds and use your brain for crying out loud.

I also get horribly offended by being ma'amed but isn't that just a respect thing down in the South? I would expect that in GA.

Well, you're not a miss anymore since you're married... he probably just saw your wedding rings and that was how he was taught to address married women.

Yep. It is always a respect thing in the South. We had it shoved down our throats to always say ma'am and sir. I know my mom drilled it into me.

I think once I hit 23, I started having people say "ma'am". LOL. Makes me feel old but then again, I appreciate the kindness and respect.

Haha, I moved out of the area of the country known for manners and then move to a place that coined the phrase "Minnesota Nice". Fitting, I suppose.

I, honestly, don't get offended if someone calls me ma'am. I am from the South and saying ma'am and sir is something that my parents instilled in my sister and I a long time ago. I'd rather be called ma'am out of respect than shortie, babe, girl, chick, or anything of that nature.

I'm not from the South and ma'am doesn't bother me. It's a sign of respect which I feel like we lack as a society these days. Like lca said... It's a while lot better than other things I could be called.

I'm impressed you had a bagger with such good manners. I get mam'ed all the time. It's not an age thing- more as a respect thing.

I suppose you're all right. Never thought about it as a respect thing. It just makes me feel a little old. I'm in Chicago though, so I can't use the whole southern thing. I do get called mam a lot, but I think it was just funny I went from being called mam to "are your parents home" within half an hour of each other lol.
