Tired of the job!!!

I'm a full time parent, hold a full time job and go to school part time. My fiance and I just moved into our house so it is still in disaray with boxes and "throw-away" piles. I'm in school for law right now so I cannot quit my job, however, I HATE it. It wasn't so bad when I started, but now I'm starting to regret saying yes the the HR lady. It pays well and the benefits WERE ok, but now they are shitty (pardon my language). I work in customer service. I have worked in two high end companies (yes, yes, I know. Surprising at my 23 years of age) and I know I can do better, but I love people so I thought it was a great job for the time being until I graduate.

I work with FSA (flexible spending account) administration and COBRA. I get yelled at on a daily basis. Literally. I get called names, told to go places only drunk people tell me to go and the customers whine in my ear like my almost 4-year-old daughter. I CANNOT STAND IT ANYMORE, but we cannot afford a job change right now. I'm trying to find ways to cope, but I cannot stand going to work.

Yea, yea, yea I know I should "just be happy I have a job", but I've been in the unemployment shoes. The last company I worked for was pharmacueticals and they went under without any of us knowing. I was jobless for almost 6 months with a child and fiance to feed. I know what it feels like. I've been here for a year now and it has started getting progressively worse. In fact, management has changed and the way the entire business operates has changed as well which, from what I've noticed, has made many people quit working here and now we are short staffed.

I need some advice on coping or at least to hear from someone in a similar boat.

(Nothing rude, please. Only helpful replies.)

  • Out of curiosity, why can't you afford a job change?  It has never cost me anything to make a change.

  • Insurance benefits. Anywhere else I go I will have to wait 90 days for them to kick in. We just don't have the money to pay medical expenses out of pocket. Right now, O is going through the rough part of her allergies and I am on medications monthly that are quite expensive with no generic. :(

  • Have you been at least looking for a job? You can't get a different job if it weren't for that. Would your child be eligible for the state kid's health insurance. I know here in Illinois a family of 3 can be making $12k monthly (yes, monthly) and qualify for health care for the child (albeit, there is a monthly co-pay). Something to look into with your state, as it might be cheaper than COBRA or going without!  http://www.allkids.com/income.html

I find that simple treats, such as a soda or piece of candy, can get me through when dealing with irate customers. Maybe you need some more stress relievers? Is fiancee pulling his weight on the homefront? Having him do more at home could free up some time for you to concentrate on unpacking, job searching, school work, unwinding, etc.

  • I am checking out state assistance to see if we qualify right now. Hopefully I can find out soon.

I have been looking around for other jobs. I have submitted a few applications and resumes as well.

  • Does your company have an EAP? You have a lot on your plate and it might help you to be able to talk things out with someone and get some coping strategies.

I'm looking for a new job too for kind of similar issues (stressful job, long hours, don't like the client population I work with) and have seen a counselor for the past couple months. While my job hasn't changed, some of the tips I've gotten have been really helpful in dealing with the stress.

Also, does your FI have health insurance? You don't mention his job, but even if it's expensive it might be cheaper than COBRA for your daughter to go onto his for a few months. And not all jobs require a 90 day waiting period for insurance to kick in.

  • My fiance works at the same place as I do. He isn't looking for another job...yet. I used to see a counsler on a regular basis, but money has been very tight so I haven't been able to meet with her in some time.
