Motion sickness medication.

Does anyone here deal with major motion sickness?  If so, what have you found prevents it?

My husband gets bad motion sickness when flying.  This is one of the (many) reasons he's sometimes often to travel.  It makes him quite miserable, particularly on long flights.  Dramamine doesn't work for him.

After a particularly miserable flight to Phoenix last year, we stopped and bought the bracelets for the return flight.  He wore those in conjunction with taking Dramamine, and seemed to be okay.  But he's worried that it was just a fluke and he's going to be miserable when we go to Hawaii.

I've heard about a prescription patch that you can get for motion sickness, but someone posted on the travel board about some nasty side effects from this like continued blurry vision even days after removing the patch.  Has anyone had any positive or negative results with this patch?

Someone else on the travel board recommended ginger pills.  Yay or nay?

Let me know if you have any suggestions.  Thanks!

  • My boss's wife uses it along with other things - she HATES flying and he said it does wonders.

What did she use?  The patch?

  • I got very motion sick on our cruise last year, to the point that I wanted to just lie in bed all day; it was miserable.  Luckily, L's uncle had extra Scop patches and they worked wonders.  The only side effect that I had was being a little drowsy on the first day I wore it.  I had no side effects after removing it.

  • I use homeopathy for things like this.  The staff at Harvest Health can help you figure out what might work.

There's also a tablet that has a few of these mixed together in it already.  You just let it dissolve under your tongue if/when symptoms start.

Ginger should be another good option.  You might want to have him try a couple of the different lozenge options before you leave to see which one he can best tolerate.  My sister had one particular brand that worked for her morning sickness but others she didn't even like to put in her mouth.

  • It sounds silly, but what about sea bands?  I had a friend who swore by them for PG nausea, and a ton of people on the cruise we went on had them. ETA: I see you posted about that above and I missed it, nevermind lol :)

Otherwise I've heard good things about scopolamine patches, if he wants to go that route.  All the meds made for motion sickness make me soooo drowsy.  I do get car sick if I am in the backseat or try to read anything.  Mint helps for a few minutes, like chewing mint gum or a peppermint.
